The Interactive News Engineering Intern will join Interactive News Technology, a team of developer-journalists embedded in The New York Times newsroom. The team builds tools for newsgathering, supports breaking news and major events, and develops new forms of digital journalism. The intern will contribute to software used by journalists and projects reaching readers, working on a software development project team in a newsroom environment. The core of the role is software engineering rather than writing stories or producing graphics, though there may be opportunities to contribute to opportunistic data or document journalism using the team's tools. The team primarily works with JavaScript, TypeScript, React and Svelte; Node.js servers; PostgreSQL; hosted Google Cloud services and serverless technologies; Git and GitHub; and AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor and Claude. The intern will work on one or more projects, collaborate with developers, designers and journalists, contribute to technical design and feature development, and receive support and mentorship. This is a paid, 10-week summer internship starting June 7, 2027, at $40 per hour for 35 hours per week. It is hybrid and based at the New York City headquarters, with at least three days per week in the office. The intern program team can provide housing and relocation resources and recommendations.
