About The Position

Brock University is seeking to fill an existing vacancy for an Instructor for the course Culture and Civilization of Central Europe: From the Prehistoric to 350CE (Germ 1P93). This position is within the CUPE4207-1 Employee Group. The mode of delivery for this course will be face-to-face. The nominal hours for a half course are 195, and for a full course are 390. Instructors teaching a 2-hour/week lecture, or equivalent, are responsible for the first hour of seminar/lab in each course. The compensation effective September 1, 2026, is $7,887.59 per half course and $15,775.20 per full course.

Requirements

  • Graduate Degree (PhD, or PhD abd) in German Studies, European Studies or equivalent
  • Record of sustained successful teaching of European culture, art, and literature courses at a University level
  • Native or near native fluency in English
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the cultural history of Central Europe from prehistoric times to 350 CE and how it is reflected and traced through cultural practices and various art forms in France, Germany, and Scandinavia
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the social, cultural and historical bases of these Western societies and how they are reflected and traced through cultural practices and various art forms
  • Successfully taught a course in Cultural Studies with a broad survey of the prehistoric cultures of France, Germany, and Scandinavia through an interdisciplinary perspective
  • Demonstrated teaching competence through previous course evaluations
  • Teaching documentation: evidence of teaching competence; official student and peer evaluations; teaching dossier; references
  • Ability to work alone without immediate direct supervision
  • Ability to work within a team; active participation in curriculum development; careful test and exam preparation; student assessment; prompt and accurate marking
  • Commitment to the incorporation of web-based pedagogical techniques, materials and resources (including textbook instructional platform, etc.) in the teaching of the course, as required
  • Competence in the use of email, Brightspace, internet, common office software (e.g., Word, Excel) and multi-media equipment
  • Commitment to responsible time management (e.g. course structuring, punctuality for lectures)

Responsibilities

  • Scheduled contact time with students
  • Non-classroom time including preparation of lectures, student consultation, marking and grading, and course administration
  • Handling grade appeals and cases of academic dishonesty
  • Working closely with the Chair of Modern Languages, Literatures and Culture
  • Incorporation of web-based pedagogical techniques, materials and resources
  • Availability for individual consultation with students (1.5 hours per section per week required)
  • Proctoring exams
