About The Position

Brock University is seeking an Instructor for GERM 1F00 Introductory Language for the Fall/Winter term. This position involves teaching a face-to-face course, including lectures and labs. The instructor will be responsible for scheduled contact time with students, preparation of lectures, student consultation, marking and grading, course administration, and working closely with the Chair of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. The compensation for this role is based on a per half course or full course rate, effective September 1, 2026. Instructors are responsible for the first hour of seminar/lab in each course if employed in a 2-hour/week lecture or equivalent.

Requirements

• Graduate Degree (PhD, PhD abd or MA) in an area of German studies
• Record of sustained successful teaching of German at a University level
• Native or near native fluency in English and German
• Commitment to and competence in the use of Standard International German
• Evidence of teaching competence
• Official student and peer evaluations
• Teaching dossier
• References
• Ability to work alone without immediate direct supervision
• Ability to work within a team
• Active participation in curriculum development
• Competence in the use of email, Brightspace, internet, common office software (e.g., Word, Excel) and multi-media equipment
• Commitment to responsible time management (e.g. course structuring, punctuality for lectures)

Responsibilities

• Scheduled contact time with students
• Preparation of lectures
• Student consultation
• Marking and grading
• Course administration, including grade appeals and cases of academic dishonesty
• Work closely with the Chair of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures
• Design all tests and exams
• Student assessment
• Prompt and accurate marking
• Incorporate web-based pedagogical techniques, materials and resources in the teaching of the course
• Availability for individual consultation with students (office hours 1.5 hours per section per week required)
• Proctoring exams
