About The Position

This role involves assisting in the Inorganic Chemistry lab, focusing on preparing for lab meetings, understanding experimental procedures, and helping students with pre-lab assignments. The Teaching Assistant (TA) will support the laboratory instructor, undergo safety training, and ensure adherence to safety guidelines. Key responsibilities include circulating among students to answer questions, guide their problem-solving approaches, ensure proper technique, and oversee the return of equipment and cleanup of work areas.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed one year of CHEM 260/261 before applying for this position.
  • Currently authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for every laboratory meeting by reading the laboratory experiment in the laboratory manual and understanding every step of the procedure.
  • Familiarize yourself with the pre-lab assignments such that you can help students with questions they may have about the assignment.
  • Assist the laboratory instructor in duties directly related to the delivery of the lab.
  • Receive laboratory safety training.
  • Follow all safety guidelines; wear goggles and appropriate clothing.
  • Circulate among the students in the laboratory section, helping students with questions as they have them.
  • Watch students to be sure they are using proper technique and correct them when they show poor technique.
  • Lead students through the reasoning that will guide them to the right way of thinking about problems in lab, rather than just giving answers.
  • Make sure students have returned common equipment (such as centrifuges and glassware) to the proper location at the end of lab.
  • Make sure students have cleaned up their work area at the end of lab.
