About The Position

This is a Student Worker position assisting in the General Chemistry lab. The role involves preparing for lab sessions, familiarizing oneself with pre-lab assignments to assist students, and ensuring adherence to safety guidelines and proper laboratory techniques. The TA will guide students through problem-solving rather than providing direct answers and will be responsible for ensuring equipment is returned and work areas are cleaned at the end of each lab session.

Requirements

Successfully completed one year of CHEM 110/111 before applying for this position.
Currently authorized to work in the United States.
Commitment of 3 hours per week.

Responsibilities

Prepare for every laboratory meeting by reading the laboratory experiment in the laboratory manual and understanding every step of the procedure.
Familiarize yourself with the pre-lab assignments such that you can help students with questions they may have about the assignment.
See the instructor before lab if you have difficulty with preparation.
Show up on time to perform your duties.
Assist the laboratory instructor in duties directly related to the delivery of the lab.
Receive laboratory safety training.
Follow all safety guidelines; wear goggles and appropriate clothing.
Circulate among the students in the laboratory section, helping students with questions as they have them.
Watch students to be sure they are using proper technique and correct them when they show poor technique.
Lead students through the reasoning that will guide them to the right way of thinking about problems in lab, rather than just giving answers.
Make sure students have returned common equipment (such as centrifuges and glassware) to the proper location at the end of lab.
Make sure students have cleaned up their work area at the end of lab.
