About The Position

The Reporting Analyst implements and ensures ongoing development and improvement of the BORN Information System (BIS) software application’s reporting portal, provides ongoing support to subject matter experts and system users involved in report use and development; develops, creates, tests and maintains Business Intelligence (BI)/reporting project deliverables and related documentation; supports the improvement of business processes; and participates in ongoing professional development. The position is temporary full-time until October 2026. Ottawa is built on un-ceded Algonquin Anishinaabe territory. Requirements

  • Criminal Record Check (CRC) (Essential)
  • College Diploma or University Degree in Business or Computer Science, Epidemiology, health informatics,or related degrees (Essential)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with reports development, data extraction and analysis processes and tools e.g. Strong understanding of database management tools, SQL, SQL Server etc. (Essential)
  • Basic understanding of epidemiological concepts related to reporting (i.e. numerators, denominators, prevalence, incidence, common statistical calculations) (Essential)
  • Familiar with BI and visualization tools, data warehouse design (Essential)
  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, especially Excel) (Essential)
  • Excellent attention to detail (Essential)
  • Ability to prioritize and good time management skills (Essential)
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English required (Essential)
  • Ability to code in SAS and R (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Confer with application users and subject matter experts.
  • Translate unique and specific reporting requirements into mock-ups and functional specifications of BIS reports and BI products.
  • Design custom BIS reports and BI products to enable system users to maximize the potential of the application as a management, quality improvement, and patient care tool.
  • Develop, document and communicate functional and technical specifications for BIS reports and BI products to ensure that the resulting products match the requirements.
  • Ensure accurate and detailed documentation concerning how and why decisions are made throughout the course of reporting projects, including design, development and work process redesign.
  • Configure and test BIS reports and BI products to ensure that they meet the established functional and technical specifications.
  • Work, coordinate with and oversee seconded departmental staff (i.e. Data analysts) conducting in-depth testing of reports.
  • Perform and document impact analysis on BIS reports and BI products from yearly or ad-hoc BIS enhancements.
  • Work with and coordinate with vendor(s) to insure successful implementation of the enhancements to the reports.
  • Insure that reports mock-ups and specifications are properly documented, updated, classified and easily accessible to team members.
  • Assist in prioritizing report development based on organizational priorities.
  • Ensure BIS reports and BI products development processes and standard operating procedures (SOP) are followed: Policies and Procedure (P&P), checklists completed, estimates provided and approvals are in place before development is initiated.
  • Participate in the evaluation and selection of BI applications and features.
  • Develop functional specifications and aid in researching potential vendors.
  • Analyze how the introduction of new or enhanced reporting applications/functions will impact current work processes.
  • Provide input recommendation and/or create policies governing the use of BIS reports and BI products, including new/revised work procedures for use in a department or on a hospital-wide basis.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain security procedures related to the BIS reports and BI products, for users and system administrators to ensure the protection of confidential patient health information.
  • Coordinate with vendor representatives such as report developers and technical analysts to facilitate reporting modifications and development, as required.
  • Provide first line technical support for BIS reports and BI products. This consists of investigating and interpreting problems as perceived and explained by a wide range of users, liaising with the vendors’ developer(s) and technical support, providing solutions and following-up with users regarding resolution.
  • Assist in establishing and monitoring report utilization audits to ensure the application software meets the requirements of the users, that the reports are being fully utilized, and that users are completely knowledgeable in all aspects of report operation.
  • Train all potential users of the reporting system including the efficient and effective use of the system and in the new work processes.
  • Adapt instructional techniques to a wide variety of learning needs and degree of familiarity with computer systems.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and presenting training materials including comprehensive manuals for use by users.
  • Participate in and/or deliver presentations and demonstrations related to BORN Information System reporting to communicate the impact that a new or upgraded application will have at various levels of the hospital.
  • Act as a resource for all system users to guide them in the effective use of the BIS reports and BI products.
  • Educate members of the BORN teams including, Coordinators, Data Analysis, Research Team and Technology Team members on various aspects of the BI products/reports.
  • Maintain and improve knowledge of BI products and reports’ functionality and other related duties by attending courses, seminars, and in-service training.
  • Maintain and improve knowledge of the BIS BI applications by attending vendor-sponsored courses.
  • Demonstrate leadership and excellence by actively participating in user groups.
  • Share best practices with colleagues in other hospitals.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current hospital policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
