The position may be in Anchorage or Juneau, depending on the location of the most qualified candidate. As a member of the Communications team in this role, you will independently manage varied communications assignments with limited direct supervision while collaborating effectively with Department programs, coworkers, clients, and other partners. Write, edit, and coordinate communications across print, digital, social media, and broadcast platforms. Campaigns, educational initiatives, and outreach efforts. Capture and produce high-quality photography and video to strengthen visual storytelling. Manage and curate social media content, engage with the public, and implement strategies to expand the Department’s reach. The working environment you can expect: This Anchorage- or Juneau-based position is part of the Department’s centralized Communications team and currently works a hybrid schedule from home and an office setting, as appropriate. Because DOH is one of the State of Alaska’s largest and broadest departments, the daily environment is fast-paced, varied, challenging, and creative, requiring independent and collaborative work on both long-term projects and time-sensitive communications for audiences across the state.

Requirements

  • Competency in Communications and Media: Knowledge of the production, communication and dissemination of information and ideas to inform and entertain via written, oral, visual media and social media.
  • Competency in Interpersonal Skills: Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.
  • Competency in Multimedia Technologies: Knowledge of the principles, methods, tools, and techniques to develop or apply technology using text, audio, graphics, or other media.
  • Competency in Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Competency in Organizational Awareness: Knows the organization's mission and functions, and how its social, political, and technological systems work and operates effectively within them; this includes the programs, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations of the organization.
  • Any combination of preparatory post-secondary education and/or progressively responsible experience in journalism, communications media, education, English, literature, fine arts, library science, radio, television, photography, advertising, marketing, sales, public relations and/or promotional work, freelance writing, technical writing and/or research, education, library work or other information dissemination field.
  • Three (3) professional references, whom we may contact by phone, are required. Two (2) of which should be supervisors, if not already provided in the application.
  • A Current Resume
  • Three (3) writing samples for at least two (2) different target audience types. Please include one long-form and one short-form writing sample (examples of requested writing: a radio ad script, social media post, newsletter or blog post) and one public education or advertising campaign you developed or implemented.
  • A copy of academic transcripts (unofficial is okay; please ensure that the institution name/URL is listed on the transcripts) is used to support that you meet the minimum qualifications competencies.
