About The Position

The Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA), under the authority of the Emergency Management Act, leads the coordination and co-operation of all organizations involved in emergencies and disasters. This includes emergency and disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. The Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) is accountable and responsible to the GoA, to Albertans, to their communities, and to industry for the protection of people, their property, and the environment from the effects of emergency events. Alberta relies on a decentralized “system” for managing the various types of emergency events that occur every year. The AEMA accomplishes its objectives by leading the co-ordination, collaboration and co-operation between all entities involved in prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery activities within this diverse system. Our agency also works to ensure vital public services, such as government services and first responders, are available during a crisis. As a senior preparedness specialist, you will lead public and partner engagement, public education, and outreach initiatives that strengthen emergency preparedness and disaster resilience across Alberta. You'll build strategic partnerships, deliver impactful learning programs, and serve as a trusted advocate for preparedness.
Requirements
- University degree in field of study related to the position, PLUS 2 years related experience or equivalent as described
- Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience, OR 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
- Related 1 year certificate PLUS a minimum 5 year of experience; OR Related 2-year diploma PLUS a minimum 4 years of experience; OR Related minimum 6 years of experience
- Experience in public engagement and community engagement, including Indigenous, youth and/or newcomer communities.
- Experience developing and delivering public education or training programs.
- Strong public speaking, facilitation, and presentation skills.
- Experience developing and implementing strategic plans, frameworks, or systems to strengthen partnerships, support collaboration, and advance organization goals.
- Experience leading complex projects, strategies, or initiatives.
- Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience applying inclusive and equitable engagement practices, using frameworks such as IAP2, DEI, and GBA+ to support meaningful participation and diverse perspectives.
- Experience working with municipalities, Indigenous communities, or emergency management partners.

- Experience serving as a spokesperson or public-facing subject matter expert.
- Knowledge of emergency management, preparedness, or disaster resilience.
- Experience developing e-learning, digital content, or educational resources.
- Experience creating communications and public awareness materials and/or campaigns.

Responsibilities
- Acting as AEMA's lead spokesperson and subject matter expert on emergency preparedness and disaster resilience.
- Identify and champion partnership opportunities that expand organizational reach, strengthen public and partner relationships, and maximize impact.
- Developing and delivering training, presentations, workshops, and public awareness initiatives.
- Leading public and partner engagement strategies that build partnerships and expand program reach.
- Creating educational resources, e-learning products, and outreach materials for diverse audiences.
- Identifying and advancing innovative public education and community engagement opportunities.
- Conducting research, analyzing data, and recommending improvements to programs and engagement approaches.
- Leading projects, supporting strategic planning, and ensuring quality program delivery.
- Representing AEMA at conferences, community events, and stakeholder forums across Alberta.
