Industrial Design Engineer

Cricut•South Jordan, UT
•Onsite

About The Position

The Industrial Design Engineer bridges the Industrial Design and Engineering teams, helping formalize design intent and resolve engineering challenges so Cricut’s product vision can be realized. The role contributes from early concept development and detailed CAD surfacing through B-side mechanical design and mass production, while helping build a design-led organization known for thoughtful, innovative products. This position works closely with Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, manufacturing partners, and suppliers to translate concepts into manufacturable products while balancing design intent, internal component packaging, cost, performance, technical constraints, and user experience. The role also contributes to consistent visual design language across product families and requires some international travel to Asia to visit suppliers and Contract Manufacturers. The position is in-office at least 4–5 days per week and is eligible for relocation assistance.

Requirements

  • 4–5 years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent portfolio demonstrating thoughtful products taken through manufacturing and mass production, including surface models, CAD, and part detailing.
  • Creo skills are essential.
  • Ability to create and maintain high-quality CAD models with Class-A surfacing in parametric software.
  • Ability to develop plastic enclosure parts from concept through mass production, including part-breakup strategy, assembly methodology, and B-side features.
  • Ability to create detailed 2D drawings and apply GD&T.
  • Strong understanding of design for manufacturing and injection-molding considerations.
  • Hands-on experience with plastics and metals for mass production.
  • Strong visual and verbal presentation skills and ability to collaborate and respond constructively to feedback.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, iterative product development environment.
  • Ability to work in-office at least 4–5 days per week.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check upon hire.

Nice To Haves

  • SolidWorks skills or knowledge.
  • Experience designing for users unlike yourself.
  • Interest in or experience as a Maker or DIY enthusiast.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain high-quality CAD models that preserve Industrial Design intent, including Class-A surfacing in parametric software.
  • Own plastic enclosure part development from early concept through mass production, including part-breakup strategy, assembly methodology, and B-side features such as ribs, bosses, and internal snaps.
  • Create detailed 2D drawings and apply GD&T to communicate critical features, tolerances, and assembly requirements to manufacturing partners.
  • Lead design-for-manufacturing work for enclosure parts, evaluating and implementing parting lines, draft, mold flow, gate locations, ejector pin placement, and other injection-molding considerations with vendors and internal engineering teams.
  • Translate design concepts into manufacturable CAD models while preserving design intent and addressing technical constraints.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to balance internal component packaging, cost targets, performance requirements, and user experience.
  • Apply knowledge of manufacturing processes and limitations, including plastics and metals used in mass production.
  • Serve as an interface between Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering, integrating internal components and mechanical constraints into the ID-driven form language.
  • Liaise with supplier teams in Asia and drive manufacturer discussions to ensure high fidelity and fast iteration during prototyping and production tooling.
  • Contribute to a consistent visual design language across a family of products.
  • Incorporate user needs, technical limitations, mechanical engineering requirements, and business goals into design decisions.
  • Facilitate creative collaboration across internal teams and external partners.
  • Present, pitch, review, and respond constructively to feedback using strong visual and verbal communication skills.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, iterative product development environment.
  • Travel internationally to Asia to visit suppliers and Contract Manufacturers as needed.
