HV Battery NVH/Durability CAE Engineer

Ford Motor Company•Dearborn, MI
•$65,100 - $166,200•Hybrid

About The Position

Ford Motor Company is seeking an experienced structures CAE engineer to lead structural design work for high-voltage battery internals and related systems. The engineer will use CAE tools to help manage the battery functional environment within specified operating conditions, working with battery design and release engineers on battery technologies. The role collaborates across the Global Electrified Propulsion Engineering organization, battery business stakeholders, vehicle teams, testing teams, and global suppliers to support battery architecture and product development. The position develops and evaluates structural analysis models and simulations for high-voltage battery packs at system, subsystem, and component levels. It also supports design development by interpreting simulation and physical test results, correlating CAE models, and providing feedback and design direction. The role is hybrid and requires onsite work four or more days per week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering.
  • At least 4 years of experience working with structural components and designs.
  • Good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to mentor young engineers and work well as a team player.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 5 years of experience in CAE structural modeling and simulation techniques for durability and NVH attributes.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent degree.
  • Working knowledge of ABAQUS, Nastran, OptiStruct, Hypermesh, Teamcenter, and Vendure/FDYNAM.
  • Working knowledge of CAE tools for durability assessments, such as nCode or equivalent.
  • Extensive knowledge of structural materials, high-strength materials, energy flow theory, and analysis methods.
  • Experience with CAE preprocessing for geometry cleanup and meshing, and with CAE model solving and post-processing using ABAQUS, Nastran, or equivalent tools.
  • Familiarity with sheet metal design specifications, structural testing setup, and data collection.
  • Proven record of innovative applications and introducing new ideas for product development.
  • Working knowledge of optimization CAE tools such as modeFRONTIER and OptiStruct.
  • Experience in vibration and durability testing.

Responsibilities

  • Build 3D battery internal structural analysis CAE models from CAD designs.
  • Debug complicated finite element (FE) models.
  • Perform 3D structural analysis simulations at system, subsystem, and component levels for high-voltage battery packs using commercial CAE codes such as Nastran.
  • Evaluate structural analysis results and provide feedback and design direction to vehicle program and battery pack design teams.
  • Work with vehicle-level teams to obtain boundary conditions for battery pack structural simulations.
  • Coordinate with battery lab and vehicle-level testing teams; specify instrumentation for data collection, process physical structural test results, and use the data to correlate CAE models.
  • Coordinate with overseas extended CAE teams on CAE meshing and geometric cleanup tasks.

Benefits

  • Immediate medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
  • Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, and subsidized backup childcare.
  • Family-building benefits, including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement and fertility treatments.
  • Vehicle discount program for employees and family members, and management leases.
  • Tuition assistance.
  • Employee resource groups.
  • Paid time off for individual and team community service.
  • Paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
  • Paid time off and the option to purchase additional vacation time.
