High Voltage Battery Thermal CAE Engineer

Ford Motor•Dearborn, MI
•Hybrid

About The Position

The Ford Global Electrified Propulsion Engineering Team develops battery architectures and product experiences in collaboration with global suppliers. The High Voltage Battery Thermal CAE Engineer performs 1D and 3D thermal and CFD analysis of high-voltage battery packs to support vehicle and battery development. The role uses thermal simulation and physical test data to guide battery design, correlate CAE models, and support product development milestones. This position works with battery design, development, and testing engineers to define test conditions and instrumentation, lead CAE-testing interactions, and use thermal analysis tools to support test reduction and virtual test signoff. It is hybrid, with an onsite requirement of four or more days per week.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent degree.
  • At least 2 years of experience in 1D and 3D thermal/CFD simulation techniques.
  • At least 2 years of working experience in thermal analysis supporting product development.
  • Expert knowledge of heat transfer theory and CAE thermal analysis simulation methods.
  • Working knowledge of CAE software for heat transfer analysis, such as StarCCM+, and CAE model-building software such as Ansa and Hypermesh.
  • Working experience in CAD geometry cleanup for CAE, simulation model building and meshing, CAE model setup and execution, and post-processing.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States; employment eligibility verification is required at hire.

Nice To Haves

  • M.S. degree.
  • Physical thermal testing experience, including thermal test data processing.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages.
  • Working knowledge or experience of high-voltage battery pack design and manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform 1D and 3D thermal and CFD simulations at system, subsystem, and component levels for high-voltage battery packs using commercial CAE/CFD software.
  • Post-process and report thermal simulation results to product development teams to guide battery design and support development milestones.
  • Analyze and process vehicle and laboratory thermal test data from battery physical testing and use it to correlate CAE models.
  • Determine loading and boundary conditions for thermal CAE/CFD models based on vehicle and laboratory physical testing conditions.
  • Work with testing and battery D&R engineers to specify thermal testing and instrumentation of high-voltage battery packs for CAE correlation and physical test reduction.
  • Lead CAE-testing interactions and apply CAE thermal tools to support testing teams, test reduction efforts, and virtual test signoff.

Benefits

  • Immediate medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.
  • Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new-parent ramp-up programs, and subsidized backup childcare.
  • Family-building benefits, including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement and fertility treatments.
  • Vehicle discount program for employees and family members, and management leases.
  • Tuition assistance.
  • Employee resource groups.
  • Paid time off for individual and team community service.
  • Paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
