About The Position

The Health Unit Coordinator works in the Med Surg Unit at Trinity Health Oakland Campus and coordinates activities related to the flow of unit and patient information. Duties include managing phones, maintaining patient charts, and ordering and stocking materials needed for unit operations and chart maintenance. The coordinator collaborates with nursing and medical staff and other hospital departments to provide excellent customer service to patients and visitors.

Available shifts are 7:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m. The position is full-time and requires working every other weekend and three holidays per year.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Certification from an accredited Unit Secretary/Health Unit Coordinator training course or equivalent work experience.

Nice To Haves

• Previous Health Unit Coordinator or Unit Secretary work experience is desired.

Responsibilities

• Greet staff, physicians, and visitors with warm, friendly customer service.
• Facilitate family inquiries about a patient’s status or condition while maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Maintain and communicate an accurate patient roster or census and available ready beds, and assist with assigning patient rooms.
• Initiate and maintain patient records, including preparing charts for procedures or surgery, inserting forms, filing reports, and thinning charts as appropriate.
• Transcribe physician orders using the computer system or manually when necessary.
• Communicate stat orders to the patient’s nurse.
• Enter hospital charge data into the computer system to assist with preparing patient charges.
• Manage phones and order and stock materials needed for unit operations and patient chart maintenance.
