Health Unit Coordinator - Med/Surg
About The Position
Sanford Health is seeking a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) for its Med/Surg department. Working under the supervision of physicians or nurses, the HUC coordinates patient admissions, transfers, and discharges and supports patient care by accurately processing information and communicating with healthcare team members. The role also facilitates the acquisition of materials and performs clerical activities that support unit operations. This part-time position has a 0.5–0.99 FTE range and 12-hour day shifts, with start times of 7:00 a.m., 7:00 p.m., or as assigned. Weekend and on-call rotations may be assigned. The position is union represented by AFSCME.
Requirements
- At least 6 months of healthcare business experience in a physician practice, as a unit clerk, in a hospital or clinic, or 6 months of direct patient care experience.
- Computer experience.

- Medical terminology course or training.
- Experience working as a Health Unit Coordinator.
Responsibilities
- Acquire information, process patient-related orders, and perform clerical duties to support effective unit operations.
- Communicate information to team members providing patient care to support team function and productivity.
- Coordinate processes for patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Collect and distribute medical records as needed.
- Order and maintain appropriate unit supply inventory.
- Coordinate and schedule appointments or procedures to meet patient care needs in a timely manner.
- Maintain regular attendance and meet ongoing role competency requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
