About the position
The Head of Department for Humanities & Social Sciences at African Leadership Academy (ALA) will be responsible for guiding educators in fostering the development of ethical African leaders. They will lead efforts to instill critical thinking skills in students and empower them to analyze the world and contribute to societal progress. The role involves setting rigorous standards for internally developed courses, supporting the professional development of teachers, and leading the continuous improvement of the academic program. The Head of Department will play a crucial role in ALA's mission to identify, develop, and connect promising young leaders on the African continent.
Responsibilities
- Spearhead efforts to guide educators in fostering the development of ethical African leaders
- Instill critical thinking skills in students and empower them to analyze the world around them
- Curate rigorous learning experiences through the Cambridge Assessment International Education Humanities Curricula and internally designed African Studies courses
- Enable students to cultivate an understanding of Africa's past, present, and future
- Provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary experience through historical, economic, geographical, literary, and political lenses on African issues
- Facilitate experiential projects simulating solutions to challenges or harnessing opportunities to accelerate Africa's aspirations
- Set rigorous standards for internally developed courses and challenge students to think critically, analytically, and creatively
- Support the development of teachers from various backgrounds to design and facilitate a learning program grounded in best practice
- Foster a community of teachers committed to the continuous improvement of the program
- Lead the continuous development, review, and improvement of the academic program
- Collaborate with other Heads of Department to define cross-disciplinary standards and review student work and assessment data
- Steward the pedagogical and academic standards of the organization
- Work with teams to continuously improve learning outcomes.
Requirements
- Experience in leading and managing a department in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences
- Strong knowledge and understanding of the Cambridge Assessment International Education Humanities Curricula
- Ability to curate and develop internally designed African Studies courses
- Passion for fostering the development of ethical African leaders
- Ability to instill critical thinking skills in students
- Knowledge and expertise in History, Economics, Business Studies, Geography, and Humanities Research
- Ability to design and facilitate a learning program grounded in best practice
- Commitment to continuous improvement and collaboration with other Heads of Department
- Strong communication and leadership skills

- Teaching three courses six days per week to exceptional students from across Africa.
- Coordinate programs and research projects under the department.
- Serve as a faculty advisor for 6-8 students.
- Contribute to student life and leadership learning by coaching student teams, clubs, or societies.
- Opportunity to work in Johannesburg, South Africa.
- Reports to the Director of Teaching and Learning.
- Expected start date: January 2024 or earlier.
