About The Position

The Groundskeeper helps maintain a clean and safe environment for Houston Zoo guests, animals, and staff. The role involves completing varied groundskeeping and cleanliness duties across locations such as staff areas behind the scenes and outdoor exhibits. Groundskeepers work in a fast-paced, goal-driven environment, coordinating with multiple departments to meet their needs. The position requires a positive, helpful, and professional approach, including timely responses to radio calls and courteous interactions with guests. The work may include weekends and after-hours events as needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• One to three months of relevant work experience.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills.
• Ability to partner across teams and with staff at all levels.
• Positive attitude, good communication skills, and ability to work as part of a team.
• Ability to work weekends and after hours for events as needed.

Nice To Haves

• Preferred experience in commercial, institutional, or industrial settings.

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of on-grounds cleanliness and upkeep duties.
• Maintain a clean and safe environment for Zoo guests.
• Interact helpfully with guests and project a professional image while in uniform.
• Respond to radio calls in a timely manner.
• Report questions, concerns, or supply needs to the supervisor.
• Complete repetitive tasks while maintaining quality.
• Work independently with limited supervision when needed.
• Follow Zoo policies and procedures to protect the safety and welfare of animals, guests, and staff.
• Coordinate with multiple departments to meet specific needs.
