About The Position

The Genetic Counseling Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting both clinical and laboratory aspects of genetic counseling services. This position involves assisting patients throughout their clinic care journey, from pre-appointment preparation to post-appointment follow-up, and also contributes to the genetic testing workflow within the genetics laboratory. Core responsibilities include preparing patient charts, answering patient inquiries, obtaining family histories, coordinating genetic testing logistics, managing medical records requests, and providing information regarding insurance pre-authorization. The role also supports genetic counselors and healthcare providers in delivering basic genetic counseling services. In the laboratory, the assistant will coordinate testing processes, including tracking pre-authorizations, managing samples, and ensuring all necessary paperwork is received. Additional duties may involve report writing, literature reviews, reconciling reports, and notifying patients of sample failures. The position also offers opportunities to contribute to projects such as developing educational materials and data entry for grants. Responsibilities

  • Assist pre, during, and post clinic care.
  • Assist in the genetics laboratory genetic testing workflow.
  • Prepare genetic counseling charts with all needed documents, including previous genetic testing results.
  • Answer patient questions prior to or following appointments.
  • Obtain patients' family histories.
  • Coordinate genetic testing (order entry, sample coordination, and sample packaging).
  • Handle medical records requests.
  • Provide information about insurance pre-authorization to patients or providers.
  • Assist genetic counselors and other health care providers in the provision of basic genetic counseling services.
  • Coordinate testing (including tracking pre-authorization, sample coordination, and ensuring all paperwork relevant to testing is received).
