About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, ensuring they are kept in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including high dusting, sanitizing surfaces, bathroom cleaning, trash removal, floor care, and grounds maintenance. The position also requires customer interaction, reporting issues to supervisors, and maintaining a neat personal appearance. Additional duties may be assigned by the supervisor or Account Manager, potentially including specialized floor care and carpet cleaning.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling up to 35 lbs, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
  • Adequate sight, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination for cleaning tasks and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, working in a counter-clockwise direction around the room, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height using a germicidal solution, and remove fingerprints and smudges from surfaces.
  • Clean bathrooms using a germicidal solution, including sinks, toilets, and dispensers, refilling as needed.
  • Empty trash cans, replacing liners and cleaning cans if necessary.
  • Dust or vacuum floors using a treated dust mophead or vacuum cleaner, working from the back of the room towards the door.
  • Perform grounds care by emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and flower beds, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and policing the parking lot.
  • Maintain public common areas by dust mopping and spot mopping main hallways, cleaning glass, planters, and checking for cobwebs.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, placing chairs back under tables, spot cleaning spills, and cleaning trash cans.
  • Remove accumulated dirty trays to the washroom, clean them using a tray power washer, and stack clean trays.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, starting at the back of the room and mopping under furniture and behind doors.
  • Visually inspect cleaned rooms to ensure all cleaning steps are completed and furniture is properly placed.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting, as well as high dusting.
  • Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner, answering questions or referring them to the appropriate person.
  • Report any broken or out-of-order items to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care (stripping, waxing, auto scrubbing, buffing) and carpet extraction/bonneting.
