About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including high dusting, sanitizing surfaces, bathroom cleaning, trash removal, floor care, and grounds maintenance. The position also requires excellent customer relations and service skills, ensuring a positive interaction with facility users. The cleaner must adhere to safety practices and report any issues to their supervisor. Additional duties may be assigned by the supervisor or Account Manager, potentially including specialized floor care and carpet cleaning.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of janitorial work operations.
  • Understanding of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Familiarity with the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate for assigned duties, including walking, standing, sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling 5-35 lbs, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
  • Good eyesight, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination for cleaning tasks and equipment operation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, working in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Sanitize surfaces below shoulder height using a germicidal solution, and spot clean windows and walls.
  • Clean bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, soap dispensers, and paper dispensers, refilling as needed.
  • Empty trash cans, replacing liners and cleaning cans if necessary.
  • Dust mop or vacuum floors using the "S" stroke method, ensuring all areas are covered.
  • Perform grounds care, including cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and parking lots, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and cleaning public area glass.
  • Clean and spot mop main hallways, ensuring glass is cleaned, planters are free of waste, and performing high dusting of window areas.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, and clean trays using a tray power washer.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, working from the back of the room.
  • Visually inspect and ensure furniture placement is correct after cleaning.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting.
  • Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner, answering questions or referring them to the appropriate person.
  • Report any broken or out-of-order items to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and stay within the assigned work area.
  • Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care such as stripping, waxing, extraction, bonneting, auto scrubbing, and buffing.
