About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including common areas, restrooms, food courts, and grounds care, ensuring all areas meet high standards of cleanliness and presentation. The position also requires excellent customer relations and service skills, reporting any issues to supervisors, and maintaining a neat personal appearance.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling with 5-35 lbs force, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
  • Requires depth perception, hand and eye coordination in operation of equipment and tool use.
  • Requires sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height, including ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans.
  • Spot clean windows and remove fingerprints and smudges from surfaces.
  • Clean and sanitize bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, and dispensers, refilling supplies as needed.
  • Empty trash cans, replace liners, and clean cans if necessary.
  • Dust mop or vacuum floors using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Perform grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and parking lots for trash, spot cleaning spills, and wiping down benches and vending machines.
  • Clean public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping hallways, cleaning planters, and high dusting window areas.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, and clean trays using a tray power washer.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, ensuring all areas under furniture and behind doors are cleaned.
  • Visually inspect and review cleaning steps after completion, making corrections as needed.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and walls, including high dusting.
  • Engage in customer relations and service, being friendly and courteous, answering questions, and reporting any broken or out-of-order items to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and stay within the assigned work area.
  • Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care, carpet extraction, and auto scrubbing/buffing.
  • Be courteous at all times.
