About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including high dusting, sanitizing surfaces, bathroom cleaning, trash removal, floor care, and grounds maintenance. The position also requires excellent customer relations and service skills, ensuring a friendly and helpful demeanor towards customers and reporting any issues to the supervisor. Additional duties may be assigned by the supervisor or Account Manager, potentially including advanced floor care and carpet cleaning.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered equipment.
  • Ability to lift/carry 1-30 lbs. of equipment, supplies, trash.
  • Ability to push/pull, using both hands and arms while performing cleaning duties, exerting 5-35 lbs force.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders while cleaning upper areas and drapes.
  • Ability to bend/twist/balance at waist, knees, neck throughout shift.
  • Ability to kneel/crouch/crawl while cleaning lower areas and retrieving supplies.
  • Ability to reach, handle, grasp and finger while operating equipment, using hand and power tools, wiping and cleaning surfaces.
  • Ability to perform overhead reaching throughout shift.
  • Sufficient sight, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination for cleaning tasks, safety standards, and equipment operation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, working in a counter-clockwise direction around the room to clean surfaces above shoulder height.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height using a germicidal solution, removing fingerprints and smudges from surfaces and spot cleaning windows.
  • Clean bathrooms using a germicidal solution, including sinks, toilet seats, toilet bowls, and refilling soap and paper dispensers.
  • Empty trash cans, replacing liners and cleaning cans if necessary.
  • Dust mop or vacuum floors, starting from the back of the room and working towards the door, ensuring all areas under furniture are cleaned.
  • Perform grounds care duties, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and parking lots for trash, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and high dusting exterior areas.
  • Clean and maintain public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping hallways, cleaning planters, and high dusting window areas.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, spot clean spills, empty and clean trash cans, and clean trays using a tray power washer.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, starting from the back of the room and working towards the exit.
  • Conduct self-inspections after cleaning to ensure all tasks are completed correctly and furniture is properly placed.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting.
  • Engage in customer relations and service by being friendly, courteous, helpful, and reporting any issues to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed by supervisor and/or Account Manager, which may include floor care, carpet cleaning, auto scrubbing, and buffing.
