About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including high dusting, sanitizing surfaces, bathroom cleaning, trash removal, floor care, and grounds maintenance. The position also requires excellent customer relations and service, reporting any issues to a supervisor, and performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
Ability to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift/carry 1 – 30 lbs. of equipment, supplies, trash.
Ability to push/pull, using both hands and arms while performing cleaning duties, exerting 5-35 lbs force.
Ability to climb stairs and ladders while cleaning upper areas, drapes.
Ability to bend/twist/balance at waist, knees, neck throughout shift.
Ability to kneel/crouch/crawl while cleaning lower areas, retrieving supplies from lower shelves.
Ability to reach, handle, grasp and finger while operating equipment, using hand and power tools, wiping and cleaning surfaces and using cleaning equipment.
Ability to perform overhead reaching throughout shift.
Ability to use sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, requiring depth perception, hand and eye coordination in operation of equipment and tool use.

Responsibilities

Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height.
Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height, including ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans.
Clean windows by spot cleaning with the proper solution.
Clean bathrooms by sanitizing sinks, toilets, and dispensers, and refilling them as needed.
Empty trash cans, replacing liners and cleaning cans if necessary.
Dust mop or vacuum floors, ensuring all areas under furniture and in restrooms are cleaned.
Perform grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and flower beds, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and policing the parking lot.
Clean and maintain public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping hallways, cleaning glass, planters, and performing high dusting of window areas.
Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, and police outside eating areas.
Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, ensuring all areas under furniture and behind doors are covered.
Visually inspect cleaned areas to ensure furniture placement is correct and to prevent issues or complaints.
Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting.
Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner, answering questions or referring them to the appropriate person.
Report any broken or out-of-order items to the supervisor.
Work quietly and maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care such as stripping and waxing, carpet cleaning, auto scrubbing, and buffing floors.
