Game Day Operator (Chicago)

Brodie Rec League•Chicago, IL
•Onsite

About The Position

The Game Day Operator runs the court and welcomes athletes on game night. Depending on the assignment from the Game Day Lead, the operator works at the score table, check-in, or on the floor helping set up the gym. The role ensures games are accurate, on time, and streamed, while providing athletes with a welcoming experience. The League Manager hires, schedules, and develops Game Day Operators. The Game Day Lead trains and leads them on the floor. Operators who meet the Brodie Standard may progress into floor leadership. The position is permanent part-time, based in Chicago, Illinois, and pays $17.05 USD per hour. Game-night shifts are approximately 6 p.m. to midnight, including weekends, and require being on site for the full shift.

Requirements

  • Experience in a customer-facing, fast-paced setting such as hospitality, retail, events, fitness, or recreational sports.
  • A strong relationship with basketball through playing, coaching, refereeing, scorekeeping, or organizing, and enough familiarity with the game to follow calls and answer rules questions.
  • Accuracy under pressure, including managing a clock, scoresheet, and stream during close games, while remaining neutral when players object.
  • Outgoing and comfortable initiating conversations with new people, greeting them, and remembering names.
  • Comfort with tablets, phones, and streaming apps, with the ability to troubleshoot before seeking assistance.
  • Availability for game nights at the assigned venue, approximately 6 p.m. to midnight and including weekends; must be on site for the full shift and have reliable transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • Scorekeeping, timekeeping, refereeing, or event-staffing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the score table, keeping the scoreboard, BallerTV iPad, and scoresheet accurate; manage the game clock, shot clock, fouls, timeouts, possession arrow, substitutions, and timing rules.
  • Set up and operate the BallerTV stream, confirm it is live before tip-off and at halftime, monitor battery and framing, and troubleshoot interruptions.
  • Welcome athletes and fans; check in athletes, distribute jerseys, answer questions, greet teams, learn captains’ names, and direct drop-in players and spectators to the League Manager.
  • Give teams at least five minutes to warm up and start games on time, never early.
  • Check scoresheets for overdue balances and players not on the roster; notify referees and the Game Day Lead as directed, and leave forfeit and roster decisions to the League Manager or, when the manager is off site, the Game Day Lead.
  • Help set up the gym according to the site map, including courts, score tables, check-in, and brand fixtures; break down and store equipment and banners, return completed scoresheets, clear the court, and confirm with the Game Day Lead before clocking out.
  • Rotate among the score table, check-in, and floor as assigned so every court is covered and the entrance is staffed.
  • Stay calm and respond to problems: stop the clock and contact the Game Day Lead for disputed scores, equipment failures, ejections, or players not on the scoresheet; stop play and get the League Manager for injuries, fights, and emergencies.
  • Follow the Brodie Standard by wearing the full uniform, arriving on time, carrying a walkie, remaining neutral during play, keeping only water at the table, and keeping personal phones away except to check the stream.
  • Complete training, a shadow shift, and certification before the first solo shift, and take feedback from the Game Day Lead.
