FPGA / ASIC Design Engineer

The Mitre Corporation•New Bedford, MA
•$103,600 - $155,400•Onsite

About The Position

MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development department is seeking engineers starting in 2027 with a background in FPGA and/or ASIC design to support advanced research and development projects of national significance. The role joins a multidisciplinary team designing and implementing proof-of-concept prototype systems on embedded hardware platforms. Projects may involve real-time communication and sensor systems using ASIC design, FPGA technology, and Software-Defined Radio platforms; high-throughput signal-processing architectures; and custom platforms targeting low size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) applications. The team rapidly prototypes advanced sensor, communication, and navigation systems on state-of-the-art embedded platforms. The position involves developing components across FPGA and ASIC technologies, implementing algorithms in software and hardware on embedded systems, and developing, integrating, and testing custom prototypes in a laboratory. Candidates must be able to support project work on-site in MITRE’s Bedford, Massachusetts labs and classified facilities, with a minimum of four days per week at the facility. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret U.S. Government security clearance; the hired candidate must obtain the clearance within one year of hire.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of related experience; alternatively, an advanced degree with relevant experience enabling immediate contribution at this job step, or an equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Solid understanding of digital system design at the Boolean logic level.
  • Solid understanding of basic circuits and electronic principles.
  • Experience with programming and working knowledge of one or more HDLs, such as VHDL, Verilog, or System Verilog.
  • Experience with FPGA or ASIC simulation, synthesis, and implementation tools.
  • Exposure to programming languages such as C/C++ and Python.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages and build tools such as TCL, Python, and CMake.
  • Fundamental understanding of microelectronic circuits and transistors.
  • Experience with ASIC or FPGA EDA tools, including synthesis, timing closure, place and route, and emulation techniques.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret U.S. Government security clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for clearance eligibility.
  • Must support project work on-site in Bedford, Massachusetts labs and classified facilities, with at least four days per week on-site.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a similar field.
  • Exposure to reconfigurable SoC platforms such as AMD Xilinx MPSoC, AMD Xilinx RFSoC, AMD Xilinx Versal, or Intel Agilex SoC.
  • Familiarity with all phases of digital design, including architecture, implementation, verification, test, documentation, and version control.
  • Exposure to leading-edge process nodes and foundries, including GlobalFoundries, Intel, and TSMC.
  • Solid understanding of processor interface techniques such as memory-mapped peripherals and interrupts.
  • Experience deploying designs on FPGA or SDR platforms from RTL through simulation, synthesis, lab bring-up, and debugging.
  • Basic understanding of signal-processing concepts and exposure to MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence and machine-learning concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Develop components across FPGA and ASIC technologies.
  • Implement algorithms in software and hardware on embedded systems.
  • Develop, integrate, and test custom prototypes in the lab.
