Founding Designer

About The Position

Concourse is building an operating system for state and local governments: a configurable platform that brings fragmented government data and workflows together. The Founding Designer will define the foundational design language for Concourse products, including tokens, primitives, components, motion, and patterns. The role supports Forward-Deployed PMs working with city and county teams to assemble solutions for varied public-sector workflows, while ensuring products remain intuitive and consistent across deployments. The designer will develop reusable interface foundations that are flexible enough to represent complex government processes yet constrained enough for non-engineers to assemble reliably. This includes addressing challenging workflows such as multi-approver reviews, conditional fee schedules, statutory deadlines, and legacy data models. The role ships design work as production front-end code, using AI agents in collaboration with engineers; Figma may be used for thinking, but is not the final deliverable. The position is based in person at Concourse's Flatiron, New York City office, five days per week.

Requirements

  • Provide a portfolio demonstrating end-to-end work shipped under real client pressure and constraints.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, or Factory as a core part of daily work, and a strong understanding of AI's current and potential capabilities.
  • High-agency, high-velocity mindset and exceptional work ethic.
  • At least 5 years of product design experience, including early-stage startup experience.
  • Experience building or substantially shaping a design system that held up across more than one product.
  • Comfort with extreme ambiguity and the ability to work from incomplete inputs such as statutes, screenshots of legacy systems, and stakeholders' partially articulated needs.
  • Pixel-level standards and systems-thinking ability.
  • Comfort using code as the deliverable; Figma may be used as a thinking tool but is not the output.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with non-technical stakeholders and the ability to translate their workflows into interfaces.
  • U.S. citizenship or work authorization.
  • Willingness to work in person at the Flatiron, NYC office five days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Define Concourse's design language and conventions, including casing, form patterns, error and empty states, motion, and authentication flows.
  • Create flexible, reusable components that Forward-Deployed PMs can use to model workflows while maintaining consistent standards.
  • Own the design library underlying Concourse products, from tokens and primitives to components, motion, templates, and documentation.
  • Ship design work as production front-end code, using AI agents alongside engineers.
  • Develop elegant solutions for complex government workflows, including multi-approver reviews, conditional fee schedules, statutory deadlines, and legacy data models.
