About The Position

Concourse is building an operating system for state and local governments, using a configurable platform to connect fragmented government data and workflows. The Founding Designer will define the foundational design language and interface layer used across the platform and its many deployments. This includes creating a consistent, intuitive experience for diverse public-sector applications, such as courthouse bail management, school-district IT helpdesks, water utility dashboards, and financial aid applications. The role focuses on designing reusable primitives and patterns that allow Forward-Deployed PMs to assemble agency-specific solutions. The designer will make complex government workflows approachable, maintain consistent quality across deployments, and deliver the design system as production front-end code in collaboration with engineers and AI agents. The position is based in person at Concourse’s Flatiron, New York City office, five days per week.

Requirements

  • Provide a portfolio demonstrating end-to-end work shipped under real client pressure and constraints.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, or Factory as a core part of daily work, with a strong understanding of AI capabilities and likely development.
  • High-agency, high-velocity approach and exceptional work ethic.
  • At least 5 years of product design experience, including early-stage startup experience.
  • Experience building or substantially shaping a design system that worked across more than one product.
  • Comfort working in extreme ambiguity and translating incomplete materials or stakeholder input into solutions.
  • Pixel-level attention to quality combined with systems thinking.
  • Comfort delivering code; Figma may be used for exploration, but is not the final output.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with non-technical stakeholders and ability to translate their workflows into interfaces.
  • U.S. citizenship or work authorization.
  • Willingness to work in person in Flatiron, NYC, five days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Define Concourse’s design language and conventions across products, including casing, form patterns, error and empty states, motion, and authentication flows.
  • Create flexible components that Forward-Deployed PMs can use to model varied workflows while keeping assembly accessible to non-engineers and preserving design standards.
  • Own the design library used across Concourse products, including tokens, primitives, components, motion, templates, and documentation.
  • Deliver the design system as production front-end code, working with AI agents and engineers.
  • Design effective solutions for complex government workflows, including multi-approver reviews, conditional fee schedules, statutory deadlines, and legacy data models.
