About The Position

Hatch is hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer to build and ship production software across its core codebase, internal tooling, and the integrations connecting its products to client systems. The main focus is Hatch’s Voice AI product, which uses real-time voice agents to answer calls, qualify leads, and book appointments through client CRM and field-service systems. The role works closely with strategic clients and investigates real call traffic, agent traces, tool-call payloads, service logs, and client APIs to identify and resolve defects in client configuration, integrations, or Hatch’s voice pipeline. Most work is hands-on engineering, including debugging, writing reproductions, adding instrumentation, shipping pull requests, and validating fixes on production traffic. The engineer also serves as a trusted technical resource for clients and Product, and participates in R&D. The role involves building API integrations, webhooks, event-driven triggers, and connectors; developing simulators, replay harnesses, behavioral tests, metrics, and dashboards; and working on prompts, guardrails, model comparisons, and production tradeoffs involving latency, cost, quality, context budgets, rate limits, and tool-calling reliability. The engineer owns technically complex client onboardings and technical consulting, identifies reusable patterns, and turns implementation learnings into product capabilities. Potential onsite visits may be required to present architectural solutions and support deployments. The role requires the candidate to be located in the United States and may be performed fully remotely from locations across the US.

Requirements

  • 1–4 years of software engineering experience.
  • Strong debugging skills and the ability to investigate production failures, including interactions without a stack trace, by examining source code, raw API responses, and system data.
  • Ability to navigate broad technology ecosystems and comprehensive developer documentation.
  • Ability to determine whether a solution belongs in core product code, middleware, or automation tooling.
  • Ability to verify fixes against real production data and deliver complete, consistent implementations to a high quality standard.
  • Strong communication skills with both business and technical audiences.
  • Ability to resolve ambiguous requirements before building and provide clear, proactive status updates.
  • Ability to work autonomously and take responsibility for the correctness of production changes.
  • Effective use of AI coding tools while maintaining ownership of the resulting work.
  • Must be located in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience shipping LLMs into a real application, including prompt design, tool calling and orchestration, evaluations, and production failure modes.
  • Familiarity with the voice technology stack.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate voice AI failures using agent traces, tool-call arguments, application logs, and warehouse queries; identify root causes and ship fixes to Hatch’s voice pipeline and integration layer.
  • Use feature flags for risky changes and validate fixes against live production traffic.
  • Build and extend direct API integrations, webhook endpoints, event-driven triggers, and connectors for CRMs and scheduling systems.
  • Reconcile client business needs with the behavior and data returned by client APIs.
  • Build local simulators, production-call replay harnesses, behavioral test suites, and instrumentation, spans, metrics, and dashboards to detect and prevent problems.
  • Work on prompt structure, guardrails, model comparisons on real traffic, and production tradeoffs involving latency, cost, quality, context budgets, rate limits, and tool-calling reliability.
  • Own technically complex client onboardings end to end and serve as clients’ primary technical consultant.
  • Develop multi-system orchestrations, custom business logic, and solutions for systems without existing connectors; identify reusable patterns.
  • Potentially visit clients onsite to present architectural solutions and support deployments.
  • Identify recurring implementation patterns that merit R&D investment, build native product capabilities where appropriate, and hand them off to an R&D team.
  • Resolve ambiguous requirements before implementation and provide proactive technical status updates to clients.
  • Use AI coding tools to accelerate investigation, tooling, and implementation while taking responsibility for the correctness of shipped work.

Benefits

  • Full medical, vision, and dental coverage effective the first day.
  • Mental health support and services via Modern Health.
  • 15 days of PTO, with accrual beginning on the date of hire and increased PTO after two or more years of tenure.
  • 12 paid holidays and one floating holiday.
  • Up to 14 weeks of parental leave.
  • Monthly wellness stipend.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan.
  • Employee stock purchase plan.
  • Professional development reimbursement.
  • Work-from-home reimbursement.
