Forward Deployed Engineer

8am•Austin, TX

About The Position

As a Forward Deployed Engineer at 8am, you embed with an internal business function—starting in Customer Support, Sales, Marketing, or Finance—to build and ship production agentic systems. You own the last mile between what is technically possible and what a specific team uses in its day-to-day work. The role combines engineering, business-process understanding, and product discovery. You build the agents, context, and skills yourself, and are evaluated on whether the function you support measurably changes how it works. You own technical delivery from discovery and scoping through development, launch, and ongoing support. You build agentic systems that automate real workflows, connect internal systems using production-grade code and SQL, diagnose issues in live deployments, and turn successful solutions into reusable playbooks and templates. You work directly with business stakeholders and build their trust, with the aim of helping them become less dependent on your guidance over time. 8am (formerly AffiniPay) is a professional business platform founded in 2005. It serves legal, accounting, and other client-focused professionals, with more than 250,000 professionals across the U.S. using its products. The company describes its mission as empowering professionals to simplify operations, ensure compliance, support profitable growth, and focus on their clients.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in Forward Deployed Engineering, Applied AI, Solutions Engineering, or a comparable hands-on, stakeholder-embedded engineering role.
  • Ability to build agentic loops—including agents, context, skills or tools, and evaluations—end-to-end.
  • Strong backend or full-stack engineering background, including production-grade Python and/or TypeScript, SQL, and REST API integration patterns.
  • Prior experience with embedded delivery and translating a business process into a technical system; ability to share a portfolio of shipped work.
  • Comfort working directly with non-technical stakeholders in Customer Support, Sales, Marketing, or Finance and translating their processes into a technical specification.
  • Ability to make sound decisions under ambiguity and prioritize shipping working solutions over polished demos.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fintech or financial services, such as payments, banking data, risk/compliance, or subscription billing.
  • Hands-on experience with low-code or orchestration tools such as n8n, Zapier, or Make, in addition to custom-built agents.
  • Familiarity with SOC 2, PCI-DSS, or data-security practices for regulated financial data.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP), CI/CD, and observability.

Responsibilities

  • Own technical delivery end-to-end for internal engagements, from discovery and scoping through building, launch, and steady-state support.
  • Build agentic systems—including agents, context/RAG, skills, tools, and evaluations—to automate workflows for Customer Support, Sales, Marketing, Finance, or Product teams.
  • Write production-grade Python and/or TypeScript and SQL to connect internal systems such as CRM, support tooling, BI platforms, and data warehouses.
  • Conduct discovery with business stakeholders and understand their workflows well enough to build solutions around those processes.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues in live deployments by reproducing problems, debugging across the stack, and iterating with stakeholder teams.
  • Turn lessons from engagements into reusable playbooks, skills, and templates.
  • Build trust proactively with supported teams so they need less guidance over time.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision plans, including a 100% company-paid HDHP plan for employees.
  • Annual bonuses and equity options.
  • 401(k) or RRSP in Canada, with a company match.
  • Flexible Time Off and paid holidays.
  • Parental leave program.
  • Wellness stipends, mental health support, and one-on-one nutrition coaching.
  • Continuous learning through 8am.edu, leadership programs, professional development funds, and individually focused talent development.
  • Charitable matching gift program, paid time off for volunteer service, and company-sponsored volunteer events.
  • Virtual and in-person team-building events, quarterly award recognition, and a peer-to-peer appreciation platform.
