Forward Deployed Engineer

Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO)•Carmel, IN
•$190,000 - $215,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Forward-Deployed AI Engineer transforms MISO’s important business challenges into practical, production-ready AI solutions. Working alongside domain experts, the role combines data, AI, and software engineering to design, build, and deploy intelligent applications and agents. The engineer owns the solution lifecycle from problem discovery through production adoption, with a focus on measurable business value and secure, reliable, reusable components that meet MISO’s enterprise standards. Success includes faster delivery of priority AI use cases, improved decision quality and operational efficiency, and production solutions that meet defined performance and governance criteria. The role also enables internal teams to operate and extend solutions independently and contributes reusable patterns and assets to MISO’s broader AI ecosystem.

Requirements

  • Strong foundational education in computer science, engineering, data science, or a related technical field.
  • 15 or more years of experience across software, data, AI/ML engineering, solution architecture, or product engineering, including hands-on delivery of production AI/ML solutions.
  • Deep proficiency in modern programming languages, especially Python, and strong SQL skills.
  • Ability to design secure, scalable back-end services and APIs.
  • Experience integrating applications with enterprise data sources, APIs, cloud services, and distributed systems.
  • Experience with cloud-native engineering practices, CI/CD, automated testing, observability, production support, and containerization technologies.
  • Applied knowledge of generative AI, agent orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation, prompt/context engineering, and AI evaluation frameworks.
  • Ability to translate complex business workflows into technical solutions by working directly with domain experts and converting operational needs into actionable requirements.
  • Familiarity with AI observability, governance, human-in-the-loop workflows, and model reliability practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, data science, or a related technical field.
  • Experience integrating enterprise systems and cloud services in a Microsoft Azure environment.

Responsibilities

  • Partner directly with business stakeholders to understand workflows, identify operational challenges, and translate domain expertise into technical requirements and solution designs.
  • Lead end-to-end AI and agentic solution delivery, from discovery and architecture through data integration, testing, deployment, observability, and continuous improvement.
  • Build working increments rapidly using governed production or representative data, demonstrating progress to domain experts through frequent iterations.
  • Design and implement AI applications, copilots, agents, retrieval pipelines, APIs, and automation that integrate with MISO’s enterprise environment and standards.
  • Develop evaluation methods and safety measures to assess accuracy, reliability, hallucination risk, workflow completion, and business usefulness against defined thresholds.
  • Use composable architectures, reusable services, and model-agnostic patterns to reduce lock-in and enable enterprise scaling.
  • Create runbooks, documentation, and reusable assets, and pair with internal engineers to transfer knowledge and support independent operation.
  • Deliver measurable business outcomes, including faster delivery from discovery to production, improved decision-making and efficiency, and solutions that teams can operate and extend independently.
