About The Position

The Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) is hiring part-time Food Service Workers for its cafes and retail markets at the VA Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. The role is suited to people who enjoy a fast-paced environment and are committed to serving America's Heroes. Workers prepare beverages and food items for customers, maintain cleanliness and sanitation, and store food safely. The position involves exposure to varying hot and cold temperatures, as well as constant standing and walking and frequent bending.

Requirements

• A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.
• Ability to read instructions and perform basic math for food preparation.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Must be able to stand and walk constantly and bend frequently.
• Must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted.
• Must serve a one-year trial period and receive written certification for continued employment after the trial period.
• Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
• Subject to a background/security investigation.

Nice To Haves

• At least one year of experience in the food service industry is preferred but not necessary.

Responsibilities

• Prepare beverages, including coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and smoothies.
• Prepare and assemble food items such as breakfast and lunch sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, and burritos.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the workplace, equipment, and utensils in compliance with health and safety standards.
• Store food properly to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
• Prepare foods according to customer orders or supervisors' instructions and approved procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
