About The Position

The Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) at the Ann Arbor, Michigan, VA Medical Center is hiring Food Service Workers to provide service in its cafes and retail markets. The role involves preparing beverages and food items to customer orders or supervisor instructions, following approved procedures, and maintaining food freshness, cleanliness, and sanitation in accordance with health and safety standards. The position is in a fast-paced environment and may involve exposure to varying hot and cold temperatures. Employees must serve a one-year trial period, during which continued employment is evaluated.

Requirements

• A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.
• Ability to read instructions and perform basic math for food preparation.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Must be able to stand constantly, walk, and bend frequently.
• Must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted.
• Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
• Subject to a background/security investigation.
• Must serve a one-year trial period; continued employment requires written certification that it advances the public interest.

Nice To Haves

• At least one year of experience in the food service industry is preferred but not necessary.

Responsibilities

• Prepare beverages, including coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and smoothies.
• Prepare and assemble food items, including breakfast and lunch sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, and burritos.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the workplace, equipment, and utensils in compliance with health and safety standards.
• Store food properly to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
• Prepare foods according to customer orders or supervisors' instructions, following approved procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
