About The Position

Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) is hiring Food Service Workers for its cafes and retail markets at the New Orleans, Louisiana, VA Medical Center. The role involves preparing beverages and a variety of food items, serving customers, and maintaining a clean and sanitary workplace while following food safety procedures. Workers may be exposed to both hot and cold temperatures and may perform other duties as assigned.

Employment is subject to a one-year trial period, during which the employee's fitness and whether continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. A current, valid REAL ID is required. Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959, and the position is subject to a background and security investigation.

Requirements

• A current, valid REAL ID is required.
• Ability to read instructions and perform basic math for food preparation.
• Must be able to stand constantly, walk, and bend frequently.
• Must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Subject to a background and security investigation.

Nice To Haves

• At least one year of experience in the food service industry is preferred but not necessary.

Responsibilities

• Prepare beverages, including coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, and smoothies.
• Prepare and assemble food items such as breakfast and lunch sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, and burritos.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the workplace, equipment, and utensils in compliance with health and safety standards.
• Store food properly to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
• Prepare food according to customer orders or supervisors' instructions and approved procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
