About The Position

Ball State University Dining is hiring a full-time, on-campus Food Service Cashier. Under supervision, the cashier performs duties related to collecting and recording money, operating electronic terminals, and supporting meal service. The role requires accurate handling and reporting of cash and other transactions, courteous customer service, equipment upkeep, and maintaining a clean and organized cashier area. The cashier also enforces dining-service rules and may assist with cleaning, food service, special events, and laundry duties. The listed schedule is a rotating two-week schedule with shifts from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on assigned days. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Requirements

Successfully complete the Cashier Training Class and pass its final test for positions with cashiering duties.
Maintain clean body, teeth, hair, nails, and clothing.
Have no allergies to soaps, cleaning agents, oven cleaners, or other food-service materials or environmental factors such as steam and dust.
Be able to read and comprehend policies and procedures concerning safety, hazardous materials, and University communications.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English.
Be able to perform all physical and mental requirements outlined for the job duties.
Be at least 18 years old.
Be authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
Perform basic mathematical calculations; operate calculators, computerized card readers, cash registers, terminals, and scales; read and comprehend written materials; and maintain attention to detail.
Meet the stated physical demands, including extended standing and walking; grasping, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, reaching, lifting, and manual dexterity; exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds frequently, and, for specified additional duties, up to 35 pounds unassisted.
Have the visual abilities specified for the tasks, including directing customers and perceiving depth.

Nice To Haves

Previous cashiering experience and experience using a computerized cash register.
Experience in fast food, a snack bar, a dairy bar, or a similar commercial establishment.

Responsibilities

Count, wrap, and verify money, and keep money and reports secure.
Open on time and maintain published meal service hours.
Operate electronic terminals accurately for logins, cash transactions, cash-equivalency and debit-account transactions, and daily media reports.
Prepare accurate manual Check Out Forms reporting sales and any overages or shortages.
Process customer transactions speedily and interact with customers courteously and helpfully; communicate customer concerns, questions, comments, and compliments to a supervisor.
Maintain cash terminals, scales where applicable, and other equipment through correct operation and cleaning; report malfunctions immediately.
Maintain cleanliness, neatness, attractive product displays, and organization around the cashier station.
Enforce dining-service rules and regulations, monitor for possible theft, verify access to all-you-care-to-eat locations, follow carry-out policies, and report violations to management.
As required, clean dining room furnishings and service areas; serve or resupply food and other items; instruct dining room attendants; assist with special meals or events; and launder, dry, fold, hang, and store dining-service items.
Perform other duties as assigned.
