Field Service Engineer – Scientific Lasers – Rochester, NY

Iris Scientific•Rochester, NY

About The Position

Iris Scientific is partnering with the North American arm of a leading scientific laser manufacturer to hire two Field Service Engineers at its Rochester, NY headquarters. The company’s laser systems support quantum technology, atomic physics, materials research, semiconductor metrology, and biophotonics. The North American installed base is growing, and one opening replaces a departing senior engineer while the other is a growth position. This hybrid field and office role is based at the Rochester headquarters, with approximately 50–60% travel to customer sites, primarily across the United States and Canada and occasionally internationally. Trips are typically two to three days mid-week, and weekend travel is avoided. About half the work involves installing systems and supporting customers onsite; the rest involves remote technical support by ticket, phone, and email, as well as in-house service-team work. Installations are the largest part of the field work. Customers include university and government research laboratories, commercial OEMs, and quantum-technology organizations. The team installs and services worldwide a flagship laser platform built in the United States. Training is primarily hands-on. The new engineer begins by shadowing a senior engineer, then works with the support ticket queue and receives in-house training on common systems. Specialized platform training takes place at the parent company’s European headquarters. The role suits candidates with hands-on optical and electronics troubleshooting experience, including early-career engineers, technicians with relevant experience, and military electronics technicians with a later degree or equivalent practical experience. Relocation assistance is available for the right candidate. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship; U.S. citizenship is strongly preferred because the role includes access to government laboratories.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience aligning and operating lasers and optical setups.
  • Practical electronics and RF troubleshooting experience, including oscilloscopes, PID and servo loops, phase-locked loops, and signal chains.
  • Strong troubleshooting ability and capacity to work independently without scripted procedures.
  • Strong communication skills and composure when working with technically sophisticated customers.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in physics, optics, photonics, electrical engineering, or a related discipline; an associate degree in laser or electro-optic technology with strong hands-on experience is also considered.
  • Willingness and ability to travel 50–60%, including occasional international trips.
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs and work safely at customer sites.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with tunable diode lasers, frequency doubling, laser locking, or spectroscopy.
  • U.S. citizenship is strongly preferred because the role includes access to government laboratories.
  • Experience operating or building tunable diode laser systems.
  • Relevant laser-lab work through research, a co-op, or an early industry role.
  • Experience as an early-career applications, test, or service engineer at a laser or photonics company.
  • Experience as a military electronics technician in avionics, radar, or electro-optics, with a later degree or equivalent hands-on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Install new laser systems at customer sites and bring them to specification.
  • Provide remote troubleshooting and technical support to customers across North America by ticket, phone, and email.
  • Diagnose and repair tunable diode lasers, including external-cavity diode lasers, frequency-converted systems, and terahertz platforms onsite.
  • Perform optical alignment, laser locking and stabilization, and troubleshooting of associated control electronics.
  • Conduct routine maintenance visits under service contracts.
  • Perform in-house diagnostics on returned systems.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with scientists and engineers, including when systems are down and under pressure.
  • Travel to customer sites, including occasional international installations and service work.
