Field Application Engineer

Paradromics, Inc.•Oakland, CA

About The Position

Paradromics is developing a brain-computer interface (BCI) platform that records activity at the individual-neuron level and uses AI to decode brain data. Its first clinical application, the Connexus® BCI, is intended to help people who cannot speak because of progressive neuromuscular disease or neural injuries communicate independently through digital devices. The Field Application Engineer is Paradromics’s technical lead for bringing scientific innovations and new BCI applications into field settings. The role focuses on translating R&D into practice and ensuring real-world clinical learnings are documented, communicated, and translated into system, process, and risk-management improvements. Reporting to the Principal Applied Scientist, the field-based engineer bridges clinical sites and engineering teams. The position involves significant travel to clinical sites and independent work in high-stakes, participant-facing environments.

Requirements

  • Master’s or doctorate in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, neuroscience, computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience in neurotechnology.
  • Hands-on experience conducting data collection with biosignal recording systems, ideally involving neural signals from human participants.
  • Comfort with R&D hardware and software, and experience contributing to iterative system improvements.
  • Proficiency in Python for time-series data analysis.
  • Clear communication across disciplines, including explaining technical concepts to clinicians, clinical realities to engineers, and relevant information to participants and caregivers.
  • Demonstrated calm, judgment, professionalism, and high emotional intelligence in high-pressure environments.
  • High ownership and accountability.
  • Ability to represent the company in the field and make appropriate decisions within defined guardrails.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience analyzing multichannel neural signals from BCIs or EEG, ECoG, or MEA systems, and experience with basic machine learning.
  • Hands-on technical experience supporting neurotechnology development with human participants.
  • Experience working with individuals with motor disabilities.
  • Experience with early feasibility or first-in-human clinical studies.
  • Familiarity with small-N studies and heightened safety and regulatory awareness.
  • Working knowledge of GCP, protocol adherence, and the role of field staff in regulated clinical studies.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the initiation of new studies and applications in the field, including planning and executing neural data collection and BCI sessions.
  • Compile and summarize clinical observations, system limitations, and session data analyses for cross-functional session-triage teams, and contribute new analyses as needed to support iterative system improvements.
  • Document edge cases in neural decoding or hardware performance and translate usability challenges into action items for Science and Engineering teams.
  • Assist with Connexus hardware and software setup, updates, and testing locally and in the field.
  • Triage, escalate, and resolve field technical issues, including software bugs, hardware failures, and signal artifacts such as noise or impedance issues.
  • Help streamline and automate session setup, data collection, data analysis, and session-triage processes.
  • Develop SOPs, field guides, training decks, and onboarding materials for technical and clinical staff, participants, and caregivers.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Affairs, Electrical Engineering, and Quality teams to evolve R&D tools into a reliable, medical-grade BCI platform.
