About The Position

The Kentucky Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) provides services and programs to promote family self-sufficiency, improve safety and permanency for children and vulnerable adults, and support collaborative decision-making with families and community partners. The Family Support Specialist I uses formal training to determine eligibility for public assistance programs and provide services to vulnerable citizens. The role requires professionalism, integrity, maturity, and self-discipline. The agency may authorize telecommuting, but may modify or end that arrangement at any time. Flexible work schedules and shift premiums are available.

Requirements

Complete two years (54 semester hours) at a college or university.
Administrative work, clerical office work, work dealing directly with the public, or experience reviewing, monitoring, determining eligibility for, and/or administering specified public assistance programs may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Good customer service skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Good time management and organizational skills.
Ability to work well under pressure.
Willingness to work as part of a team.
Submit to a fingerprint-based criminal background check.

Responsibilities

Interview clients in person and/or by phone for basic public assistance programs.
Gather, complete, and review required documentation.
Participate in formal and on-the-job training and observe other staff.
Track processing deadlines for timely case activity and case hearings.
Learn to identify resources and appropriate referrals.
Learn to operate computer terminals and personal computers, and prepare and maintain case records.
Enter case information into the computer.
