About The Position

Apple’s Exploratory Design Group (XDG) seeks curious, critical device scientists and engineers with broad knowledge of device design across photonic, electronic, electromechanical, and/or optomechanical fields, as well as nano-manufacturing concepts for novel devices. Working with cross-functional experts, the scientist will apply knowledge of device structure, physics, and fabrication to design, model, prototype, and innovate on future Apple systems. The role involves hands-on research to conceive and evolve emerging concepts and devices. The scientist will develop quantitative understanding of how optical devices interact with computational systems, optimize performance, and balance exploratory risk with tangible value in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary research environment. They will also communicate plans and technical results to the team and broader audiences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in optoelectronics, electromechanical, optomechanical, or a similar engineering field.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience setting up laboratory equipment, including building new equipment to test new concepts.
  • Experience in research process development and fabricating and characterizing photonic devices.
  • Experience modeling and designing photonic and electronic devices, including with new materials.
  • Deep understanding of nanoscale materials physics, nanoscale device principles, and device fabrication.
  • Expertise in Python or at least one modern general-purpose scientific programming language.
  • Strong analytical thinking, self-starting ability, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong work ethic.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in an electro-optical, nanoscale-devices, or material-science-of-devices-related field.
  • Experience managing small to medium-sized teams in a research setting.
  • Significant hands-on experience setting up research laboratory test rigs from scratch for nanoscale device testing.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new fields and taking on new challenges, with a track record of collaborative innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive, analyze, model, optimize, and evolve new and emerging concepts and devices for future Apple systems.
  • Use device modeling to develop a deep, quantitative understanding of optical device interactions with computational systems.
  • Participate in the design, prototyping, and characterization of devices and systems.
  • Communicate plans and technical results through team meetings, written reports, and presentations to wider teams and management.
  • Look beyond traditional boundaries for new applications and balance the risks of novelty against delivering value.
  • Learn new concepts quickly and manage competing demands in an engineering research setting.
