About The Position

Apple’s Exploratory Design Group is seeking a curious, inquisitive, and critical device scientist or engineer with broad knowledge of device design across photonic, electronic, and/or electromechanical or optomechanical disciplines, as well as development of nanomanufacturing concepts for novel devices. Working with cross-functional experts, you will apply deep knowledge of device structure, physics, and fabrication to design, model, prototype, and innovate. In this role, you will drive engineering innovation through hands-on research to conceive, model, and evolve emerging concepts and devices for future Apple systems. You will use broad knowledge of photonics, physics, and engineering to develop a quantitative understanding of how optical devices interact with computational systems and to optimize their performance. You will balance the risks of novel exploration with delivering tangible value in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary research environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in optoelectronics, electromechanical engineering, optomechanical engineering, or a similar engineering field.
  • Experience setting up laboratory equipment, including building new equipment to test new concepts.
  • Experience in research process development, photonic-device fabrication, and characterization.
  • Experience modeling and designing photonic and electronic devices, including using new materials.

Nice To Haves

  • 10 or more years of relevant industry experience.
  • PhD in an electro-optical, nanoscale-devices, or material-science-of-devices-related field.
  • Experience managing medium to small teams in a research setting.
  • Significant hands-on experience setting up research laboratory test rigs from scratch for nanoscale device testing.
  • Deep understanding of materials physics at the nanoscale and principles of nanoscale devices and their fabrication.
  • Expertise in Python or at least one modern general-purpose scientific programming language.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new fields and taking on new challenges, with a track record of collaborative innovation.
  • Strong analytical thinking, self-starting ability, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong work ethic.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct hands-on research to conceive, model, and evolve emerging concepts and devices for future Apple systems.
  • Design, model, prototype, and innovate devices using knowledge of device structure, physics, and fabrication.
  • Build a quantitative understanding of how optical devices interact with computational systems and optimize their performance.
  • Balance exploratory risks with delivery of tangible value in a multidisciplinary research environment.
