About The Position

Barr is seeking an environmental engineer to join its Assessment and Remediation business unit at its Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor, Michigan, offices. The position may use a hybrid arrangement, splitting work between a Barr office and a home office. The engineer will work independently or on project teams to support environmental investigations and remediation projects, including contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, and soil gas. Work may also involve water and wastewater treatment facilities for industrial and municipal clients. Assignments may include preparing technical work plans, cost estimates, and contracts; interpreting environmental data; evaluating technologies; developing remediation and reclamation strategies and designs; coordinating bench- to field-scale technology demonstrations; completing feasibility studies; preparing plans and specifications; and writing technical reports. Other duties may include field investigations, treatment-system monitoring and evaluation, and construction observation. Fieldwork may occur year-round and is expected to account for up to 30% of the work; travel may be up to 15%, with project needs varying seasonally and over time. The role calls for a clear and confident communicator who works effectively both collaboratively and independently. The successful candidate is adaptable, organized, proactive, analytical, attentive to detail, and takes ownership of work in dynamic and sometimes challenging conditions. For more experienced candidates, leadership, mentoring, and client relationship-building are also important. The position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The anticipated annual compensation range is $80,000–$100,000, varying with relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. Fieldwork may involve rough construction-site terrain; industrial facilities with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other typical industrial conditions; and waste disposal or hazardous-material cleanup sites. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required, and some clients may request participation in drug screening. Safety training is provided. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation. Barr is an employee-owned firm of engineers, scientists, and professionals.
