About The Position

Barr is seeking a mid-level environmental engineer focused on remediation to support its Assessment and Remediation business unit. The position may be based in Barr’s Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor, Michigan, office and may use a hybrid arrangement, splitting time between an office and a home office. The engineer will work independently or on project teams on investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, and soil gas. Work may include preparing technical work plans and cost estimates, contracting for investigations, interpreting data, evaluating technologies, developing remediation and reclamation strategies and designs, coordinating technology demonstrations, completing feasibility studies, preparing plans and specifications, and writing technical reports. Other assignments may include field investigations, treatment-system monitoring and evaluation, construction observation, and work involving industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities. The role includes project coordination, contractor oversight, implementation of technologies, and addressing complex site conditions and regulatory requirements. It requires clear technical documentation and communication with technical and non-technical audiences, as well as collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and clients. Fieldwork may occur year-round, vary seasonally, involve up to 30% of work time, and require out-of-town travel of up to 15%. The position may involve hazardous-material cleanup sites and waste disposal sites. Safety training will be provided; an OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required, and specific clients may request participation in a drug-screening program. The ideal candidate is a clear communicator who works effectively both collaboratively and independently, and is adaptable, organized, proactive, analytical, detail-oriented, and accountable. For more experienced candidates, leadership, mentoring, and client relationship-building are also important. Barr emphasizes teamwork, quality, and integrity in delivering environmental solutions.
