About The Position

Barr is seeking a geologist to join its Assessment and Remediation business unit in Michigan. The position may be based in the Ann Arbor or Grand Rapids office and may use a hybrid work arrangement, splitting time between a Barr office and a home office. The geologist will work individually or on project teams to support environmental assessments, investigations, remediation planning, and related consulting work. Periodic travel is required, with up to 15% travel and up to 30% fieldwork expected; project needs may vary seasonally and over time. Assignments may include ASTM Phase I environmental site assessments for property transactions; planning and coordinating Phase II investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and vapor intrusion; interpreting data and developing site conceptual models; developing site management strategies and response action plans; evaluating remediation technologies and feasibility; estimating costs; completing contracting; preparing technical reports; and responding to quotes and proposals. Other work may involve field investigations, aquifer testing and analysis, and construction observation, including observing drilling and monitoring-well installation, classifying soil and bedrock samples, and collecting samples for field screening and laboratory analysis. The role calls for a collaborative, adaptable, organized, and proactive communicator with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ownership of work in dynamic and sometimes challenging conditions. More experienced candidates may also contribute leadership, mentoring, and client relationship development. The work may take place on rough construction-site terrain or in facilities with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other industrial conditions. Assignments may include waste disposal sites and sites requiring hazardous-material cleanup. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required; safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in drug screening at the request of specific clients. Candidates must be able to perform the job with or without reasonable accommodation. Fieldwork may involve varying outdoor conditions, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching for extended periods, using required personal protective equipment, working individually in remote locations, and safely operating or working around environmental monitoring and sampling equipment. The anticipated salary range is $75,000–$95,000 annually. Compensation varies based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. The position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
