About The Position

Longenecker & Associates (L&A), a Geosyntec Company, is seeking an experienced mechanical designer to support the W93 Systems Development and Realization group at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The role focuses on checking design definition and requires expertise in 3D computer-aided design (CAD), hardware design and fabrication, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and engineering concepts. The work is expected to be completed at an expert level with little direction and may involve developing original technical solutions to complex or unique problems that affect project outcomes. The technologist may guide multidisciplinary teams through design iterations to identify and address potential engineering defects and may mentor junior staff on model-based definition (MBD) and GD&T. The group defines, develops, and fields the warhead system for a new Navy sub-launched ballistic missile weapon program, collaborating with government customers, national laboratories, design agencies, and production agencies through design, qualification, and realization processes. The position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. U.S. citizenship and the ability to pass a federal background investigation to obtain and maintain DOE Q security clearance are required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, science, mathematics, or a related field from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to successfully pass a federal background investigation to secure and maintain DOE Q security clearance.
  • Advanced understanding of mechanical computer-aided design (CAD).
  • Experience with mechanical CAD, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, and testing.
  • Experience checking Creo models and drawings for form, fit, and function, and with model-based definition (MBD).
  • Experience conducting tolerance and stack analyses and complying with current design standards.
  • Mechanical design experience ensuring product definition meets requirements and supports producibility while reducing rejected products.
  • Knowledge and experience with MBD, including recommending best practices or improvements while maintaining compliance with NNSA, LANL, and industry standards.
  • Experience with Creo 3D CAD software, PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis software.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14 standards, particularly Y14.5-2009 and Y14.41 MBD.
  • Experience developing and interpreting 3D CAD model standards, practices, and procedures for conveying design intent within and across National Security Enterprise organizations.
  • Knowledge of hardware fabrication, inspection, and assembly processes.
  • Experience with weapon-system configuration-management workflows for authorization, review, release, and distribution of models, drawings, specifications, and related product definition.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks for varied customers while ensuring product definition meets requirements and design intent.
  • Experience leading reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and testing.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop constructive, cooperative working relationships and support multidisciplinary product-development teams.
  • Completion of required health and safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in draft/design work in both weapons and non-weapons arenas.
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational design and/or drafting standards.
  • Previous model/drawing checking experience in the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
  • Active Q clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Check design definition, including Creo models and drawings, for form, fit, and function and for compliance with model-based definition practices.
  • Apply expertise in 3D CAD, hardware design and fabrication, GD&T, and engineering concepts to technical work.
  • Develop technical solutions to complex or unique engineering problems, using ingenuity, creativity, and independence.
  • Guide teams with diverse backgrounds through design iterations to address potential engineering defects.
  • Mentor junior staff on model-based definition and GD&T.
  • Conduct tolerance and stack analyses and support compliance with current design standards.
  • Ensure product definition meets requirements and design intent, supports producibility, and helps reduce rejected products.
  • Recommend MBD best practices or improvements while maintaining compliance with applicable NNSA, LANL, and industry standards.
  • Work on multiple tasks for a variety of customers to ensure product definition meets requirements and design intent.
  • Lead reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and testing.
  • Support cooperative working relationships and teams of engineers, physicists, scientists, technologists, and technicians.
  • Follow required health and safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing requirements.
