About The Position

Longenecker & Associates, a Geosyntec Company, is seeking an experienced mechanical designer to support the W93 Systems Development and Realization group at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The role focuses on checking design definition and requires expertise in 3D computer-aided design (CAD), hardware design and fabrication, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and engineering concepts. Work is expected to meet expert standards with little direction, and involves developing technical solutions to complex or unique problems using ingenuity, creativity, and independence. Solutions may be original and affect the outcome of an entire project. The position may involve guiding teams from diverse backgrounds through design iterations to address potential engineering defects, and mentoring junior staff in model-based definition (MBD) and GD&T. The successful candidate will support the W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization Group, which defines, develops, and fields a warhead system for a new Navy submarine-launched ballistic missile program. The group works with DoD/Navy and DOE/NNSA customers, design agencies, and production organizations to define requirements and support design, qualification, and realization processes. The position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. Due to federal contract requirements, candidates must be U.S. citizens and able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance. Health and safety training, medical monitoring, and client-required drug and background testing are also required. Federal contractors must maintain a drug-free workplace, and federal restrictions on marijuana use may apply regardless of state law.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math, or a related field from an accredited institution, plus 8 years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • U.S. citizenship due to federal contract security requirements.
  • Ability to pass a federal background investigation and obtain and maintain DOE Q security clearance.
  • Advanced understanding of mechanical computer-aided design.
  • Experience with mechanical CAD, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, and testing.
  • Experience checking Creo models and drawings for form, fit, and function, and with model-based definition.
  • Experience conducting tolerance and stack analyses and complying with current design standards.
  • Mechanical design experience ensuring product definition meets requirements and supports producibility while reducing rejected products.
  • Knowledge and experience with MBD, including recommending best practices or improvements while maintaining compliance with NNSA, LANL, and industry standards.
  • Experience with Creo 3D CAD software, PDMLink Product Lifecycle Management software, GD&T, and tolerance stack-up analysis software.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14 standards, particularly Y14.5-2009 and Y14.41 MBD.
  • Experience developing and interpreting 3D CAD models, standards, practices, and procedures for conveying design intent internally and to other National Security Enterprise organizations.
  • Knowledge of hardware fabrication, inspection, and assembly processes.
  • Experience with weapon-system configuration-management workflows for authorization, review, release, and distribution of models, drawings, specifications, and related product definition.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks for a variety of customers and ensure product definition meets requirements and design intent.
  • Experience leading reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and testing.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build constructive, cooperative working relationships and support teams of engineers, physicists, scientists, technologists, and technicians.
  • Completion of health and safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in drafting or design work in both weapons and non-weapons settings.
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational design or drafting standards.
  • Previous model and drawing checking experience in the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
  • Active DOE Q clearance.
