Engineering Manager - Rules & Report Platform

Caris Life Sciences•Irving, TX

About The Position

Caris Life Sciences is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a front-line engineering team responsible for the report-generation and rendering platform and the clinical rules engine. These live, business-critical clinical systems support laboratory instruments and processes, capture results, and deliver patient reports. The work has heightened change-control requirements and involves close partnership with the report-path Product Manager and quality and regulatory organizations. This is a player-coach role in the Clinical Software Engineering organization. The manager owns delivery, quality, and operational health for an assigned platform team while remaining technically engaged in design and code review. The platforms operate under SOX financial controls and FDA regulatory requirements, and the manager is accountable for supervision, change-control discipline, and engineering standards. The team uses AI coding assistants and agentic workflows across design, implementation, and test generation. Characterization tests and golden-master replay validation provide evidence for regulated changes. Delivery uses CI/CD, application-level observability, and risk-based release governance aligned with FDA Computer Software Assurance guidance. Modernization is active, funded work, and the manager is responsible for making automation-first practices part of the team's daily work. The position reports to the Senior Director, Clinical Software Engineering.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • At least 2 years of direct people-management or formal team-lead responsibility for a production software team.
  • Experience delivering and operating software subject to FDA, SOX, CLIA, HIPAA, or equivalent regulated-environment controls.
  • Experience managing delivery using agile or Scrum practices, including planning, estimation, and stakeholder communication.
  • Experience hiring and onboarding software engineers.
  • Experience leading teams that use automation and AI-assisted engineering practices in daily delivery, including automated testing, CI/CD, and scripted operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in healthcare, clinical laboratory, diagnostics, or life sciences software environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain technically engaged while managing, including substantive contributions to design review, code review, and architectural decisions on a live production system.
  • Experience establishing or reshaping a team while maintaining delivery continuity.
  • Experience managing teams that operate production systems with formal on-call rotations.
  • Familiarity with structured knowledge-transfer practices when teams take on existing platform scope.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a front-line software engineering team, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, coaching, and career development.
  • Own platform delivery, including sprint planning, prioritization with the paired Product Manager, estimation, and predictable release execution under regulated change control.
  • Participate in design and architecture reviews, conduct code reviews at a meaningful cadence, and maintain engineering standards for testing, documentation, and observability.
  • Operate the team using an automation-first model, making AI-assisted workflows standard practice and treating automated testing and evidence coverage as core delivery responsibilities.
  • Onboard engineers to the regulated environment, including structured knowledge transfer when new team members take on existing platform scope.
  • Partner with Application Site-Reliability Engineering on production readiness, incident response, and post-incident remediation while keeping production access within segregation-of-duties requirements.
  • Maintain sustainable team health through balanced on-call and support loads, managed work-in-progress, and early escalation of capacity risks.
  • Provide team-level facts for quarterly capacity and hiring planning, including throughput, support load, and skill coverage.
  • Maintain change-control records, review evidence, and documentation to SOX and FDA standards for team output.
  • Embed secure SDLC practices, including OWASP Top Ten awareness in design and code review and early coordination of penetration testing.
