Engineering Manager - Rules & Report Platform

Caris Life Sciences•Irving, TX

About The Position

Caris Life Sciences is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a front-line team responsible for its report-generation and rendering platform and clinical rules engine. These live, business-critical clinical systems support laboratory processes and produce patient reports, so their outputs directly shape patient-care documents. The role operates under SOX financial controls and FDA regulatory requirements, with heightened change-control rigor and close partnership with the report-path Product Manager and quality and regulatory organizations. This is a player-coach position reporting to the Senior Director, Clinical Software Engineering. The manager owns delivery, quality, and operational health for the assigned platform team while remaining technically engaged in design and architecture reviews and code review. The engineering environment uses AI coding assistants and agentic workflows, characterization tests and golden-master replay validation, CI/CD, application-level observability, and risk-based release governance aligned with current FDA Computer Software Assurance guidance. Modernization of established systems is active, funded engineering work, and the manager is accountable for making automation-first practices part of the team's daily work. The role includes periodic travel to other Caris sites or partner locations. After-hours response to emergency production issues and participation in escalation rotations may be required. Candidates must successfully complete the pre-employment process, which may include a criminal background check, drug screening, a credit check where applicable, and reference verification.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 8 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • At least 2 years of direct people-management or formal team-lead responsibility for a production software team.
  • Experience delivering and operating software subject to FDA, SOX, CLIA, HIPAA, or equivalent regulated-environment controls.
  • Experience managing delivery with agile or Scrum practices, including planning, estimation, and stakeholder communication.
  • Experience hiring and onboarding software engineers.
  • Experience leading teams that apply automation and AI-assisted engineering practices in daily delivery, including automated testing, CI/CD, and scripted operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in healthcare, clinical laboratory, diagnostics, or life sciences software environments.
  • Ability to remain technically engaged while managing, including substantive contributions to design reviews, code reviews, and architectural decisions on a live production system.
  • Experience standing up or reshaping a team while maintaining delivery continuity.
  • Experience managing teams that operate production systems with formal on-call rotations.
  • Familiarity with structured knowledge-transfer practices when teams absorb existing platform scope.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a front-line software engineering team, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, coaching, and career development.
  • Own platform delivery, including sprint planning, prioritization with the paired Product Manager, estimation, and predictable releases under regulated change control.
  • Participate in design and architecture reviews and perform code reviews at a meaningful cadence; uphold engineering standards for testing, documentation, and observability.
  • Run the team using an automation-first operating model, making recurring manual work a target for automation and treating AI-assisted workflows and automated test and evidence coverage as standard delivery practices.
  • Onboard engineers to the regulated environment and provide structured knowledge transfer when team members take on existing platform scope.
  • Partner with Application Site-Reliability Engineering on production readiness, incident response, and post-incident remediation while keeping production access within segregation-of-duties requirements.
  • Maintain sustainable team health through balanced on-call and support loads, managed work-in-progress, and early escalation of capacity risks.
  • Provide team-level facts for quarterly capacity and hiring planning, including throughput, support load, and skill coverage.
  • Maintain change-control records, review evidence, and documentation to SOX and FDA standards for team output.
  • Embed secure SDLC practices, including OWASP Top Ten awareness in design and code review and early coordination of penetration testing.
