Engineering Manager, Platform

Nourish•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Nourish is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead Platform Engineering. The team manages the company’s technical infrastructure, ensuring reliability and scalability while accelerating developer velocity as the organization and product grow. The role owns architecture that keeps patient and provider workflows dependable under increasing load, enables product teams to ship without repeatedly rethinking infrastructure patterns, and helps harden shared LLM/RAG systems into safe, measurable, production-grade systems. This is a full-time role. Nourish strongly prefers candidates based in New York City or San Francisco, with exceptions for truly exceptional candidates. The manager will build, lead, and develop a team of 4–5 engineers while remaining hands-on through architecture, pair programming, coding, code reviews, and on-call work. They will set the team’s vision and roadmap, establish effective planning and feedback rituals, and set technical direction for systems supporting business-critical work across the engineering organization. The role also includes reporting platform health to leadership and partnering with IT and Legal to maintain security and compliance controls, building reliable and auditable systems that can scale through rapid growth and regulatory complexity.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with modern full-stack technologies.
  • 2+ years of hands-on engineering management experience.
  • Experience hiring engineers and managing performance, promotions, and career development.
  • Ability to pair program with the team and contribute directly when needed.
  • Exceptional cross-functional judgment, including the ability to write a PRD, understand product-team bottlenecks, size an opportunity, and make progress without waiting on external stakeholders.
  • High proficiency with TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL, ECS on AWS, or similar modern stacks.
  • Experience shipping and owning production systems in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
  • Ability to balance people leadership with technical depth, delivery focus, and clear communication.
  • Interest in Nourish’s mission to improve people’s health by making it easy to eat well.

Nice To Haves

  • Healthcare or regulated-industry experience, including HIPAA-covered systems, BAAs with vendors, and access controls.
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform or AWS CDK.
  • Observability instrumentation experience; Nourish uses OTel to Axiom.
  • Incident leadership experience, including on-call rotations, incident response, and postmortem follow-through.
  • Developer experience history, including CI and internal tooling.
  • Security engineering experience, including vulnerability management, POLP enforcement, and SOC 2 compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing team of 4–5 engineers with strong technical ownership.
  • Coach engineers through regular feedback, career development, calibration, and performance management.
  • Scale the team through recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding.
  • Stay hands-on through architecture, pair programming, coding, code reviews, and on-call.
  • Set the team’s vision and roadmap in collaboration with engineering leads, security, IT, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Drive thoughtful decisions around system design, code quality, observability, reliability, and scalability.
  • Establish team rituals, including sprint planning, OKR planning and reporting, quarterly planning, and retrospectives.
  • Operate with urgency and sound judgment in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.
  • Set technical direction for systems that support business-critical work across the engineering organization.
  • Report platform health to leadership using metrics such as uptime, incident response time, infrastructure cost, and time-to-production KPIs.
  • Partner with IT and Legal to maintain and improve security and compliance controls.
  • Build reliable, auditable systems that can safely scale through rapid growth and regulatory complexity.
