Platform Engineering Manager

SpotOn
•$170,000 - $215,000

About The Position

SpotOn is hiring an Engineering Manager, Infrastructure to lead two teams responsible for the engineering delivery platform and Kubernetes compute platform. The role oversees CI/CD, GitOps, the developer platform, and the EKS fleet as SpotOn consolidates onto GitHub Actions, Argo CD, and EKS, retires legacy clusters and pipelines, strengthens governance and PCI DSS 4.0.1 compliance, and incorporates AI into engineering workflows. The manager will lead an experienced team whose staff engineers already guide technical work, with an emphasis on people leadership, customer focus, a clear operating model, and continued platform improvement. The teams own CI/CD for engineering using GitHub Actions and a self-hosted Actions Runner Controller fleet, plus AWS-managed Argo CD serving approximately 3,700 workloads. They also own Backstage, software templates and golden paths, registries, secrets delivery, platform documentation, an MCP server, and AI skills for engineers. Compute responsibilities include more than 23 GitOps-managed EKS clusters and Argo CD hub clusters, with capacity and autoscaling, add-ons, Kyverno policy, and a standard Helm chart. The team coordinates EKS upgrades across approximately 40 environments in five tiers, three times a year. The manager will develop engineers, set expectations, provide feedback, and own performance and career growth. They will enable staff engineers to focus on technical leadership, collaborate across Platform teams, improve operational efficiency, complete platform consolidation and legacy retirement, and keep fleet operations predictable. They will treat engineering teams as platform customers, use their feedback to shape the roadmap, and own reliability, incident learning, systemic improvements, and partnership with Security on PCI DSS controls for payments workloads. The position is remote within the United States or based in SpotOn’s Chicago or Detroit offices. It reports to the Director of Platform Engineering. U.S. work authorization is required; visa sponsorship is unavailable.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience managing engineers on platform, infrastructure, or developer-productivity teams.
  • Experience leading senior and staff-level engineers and setting direction without needing to be the deepest technical expert.
  • Sound technical judgment in Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, as well as CI/CD and GitOps delivery.
  • Ability to assess designs, production risks, and trade-offs, and ask questions that lead to durable solutions.
  • Track record delivering cross-team platform migrations or adoption programs, including managing dependencies across many teams and communicating risk to leadership.
  • Experience owning production reliability, including on-call health, incident response, and systemic follow-through.
  • Clear, direct communication with engineers, peer leaders, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • U.S. work authorization; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with Argo CD, GitHub Actions, Karpenter, Kyverno, or Backstage.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms with a product mindset, including golden paths, self-service, and developer experience metrics.
  • Experience in a PCI DSS or similarly regulated environment.
  • Experience applying AI tools to developer workflows or platform operations.
  • Experience leading a team distributed across U.S. and European time zones, or a clear plan for doing so effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow the team through regular 1:1s, clear expectations, candid feedback, and ownership of performance and career development.
  • Handle management and coordination work so staff engineers can focus on architecture, technical collaboration, and complex technical problems.
  • Collaborate with other Platform Engineering Managers across the platform domain.
  • Drive operational efficiency in building and maintaining the platform.
  • Complete platform consolidation and legacy retirement, coordinating with service-owning teams, communicating risks to leadership, and assigning clear owners to post-migration cleanup.
  • Run cluster upgrades, capacity work, and partner notifications predictably while balancing interrupts with roadmap commitments.
  • Improve the developer experience through defaults, templates, documentation, and AI-assisted tooling, using feedback from consuming teams to guide priorities.
  • Own reliability and compliance for delivery and compute, including incident response, systemic fixes, and partnership with Security on PCI DSS controls for payments workloads.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Company stock plan and RSUs.
  • Paid vacation, 10 company holidays, sick time, and volunteer time off.
  • Employee Resource Groups.
  • Monthly cell phone and internet stipend.
  • Tuition reimbursement up to $2,000 per calendar year.
