About The Position

Via is hiring an Engineering Manager for its Remix team to lead a full-stack team building transit planning and scheduling tools. The team develops fixed-route and on-demand scheduling and optimization applications that help transit planners explore network concepts, model scenarios, and communicate plans to stakeholders. The role combines technical leadership with product development that shapes public transportation for millions of people. The manager will own technical direction for a product that combines geospatial data, React user interfaces, and algorithmic optimizations, balancing performance, usability, and reliability across the full stack. The role partners with product managers, designers, customers, and other Via engineering teams to understand workflows, set priorities, make architectural decisions, and align on shared infrastructure, APIs, and platform-wide concerns. It also includes mentoring and growing engineers and improving engineering processes such as code review standards and CI/CD pipelines. This is a hybrid position with an expectation of being onsite in San Francisco two to three days per week.

Requirements

At least 8 years of software engineering experience.
Strong full-stack foundation, ideally including TypeScript and React on the frontend and Rails, Python, or a similar technology on the backend.
Experience managing engineering teams and creating an environment that supports clear expectations, mentorship, and professional growth.
Experience with production applications, including on-call work, deployments, and production maintenance.
Comfort making technical decisions in a complex, data-rich domain.
Understanding of databases, performance tradeoffs, and maintaining product reliability and speed as usage grows.
Curiosity and empathy when working with engineers, stakeholders, and customers.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

Collaborate with Via engineering teams on shared infrastructure, APIs, and cross-cutting concerns as the platform scales globally.
