Senior Software Engineer - Optimization, Remix

Via•San Francisco, CA
•$170,000 - $220,000

About The Position

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Remix engineering team, you’ll build software that cities rely on to design and improve public transportation systems, with a focus on access, equity, and long-term sustainability. You’ll own features end to end, from concept to production, and help shape what the team builds and how it builds it. The technology stack includes Python, Ruby, TypeScript, and React, and projects may involve optimization, geospatial computation, machine learning, and AI. You’ll improve planning and scheduling products, build and scale optimization and backend systems, and ensure they run quickly and reliably in production. The role involves collaboration with cross-functional partners, customers, and transit professionals, as well as contributing to engineering practices, architecture, processes, and tools that support productivity and code quality.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Experience building and scaling a computationally hard system in production, such as optimization, routing, search, simulation, or geospatial processing.
  • Effective use of AI tools in day-to-day engineering work.
  • Collaborative, humble, empathetic, and feedback-driven approach.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with operations research, mathematical optimization, or applied machine learning.
  • Experience with geospatial data, mapping technologies, or data visualization.
  • Passion for companies with strong values and missions.
  • User-centric approach, including finding value in talking to customers and addressing core customer needs.

Responsibilities

  • Improve planning and scheduling products so planners can explore concepts, make data-informed decisions, and deliver better service to riders.
  • Build, scale, and improve the optimization and backend systems behind the products, ensuring they run quickly and reliably in production.
  • Collaborate with designers, data scientists, algorithm researchers, product managers, in-house transit planners and schedulers, and customers.
  • Work across different technologies in the stack to deliver a strong end-to-end user experience.
  • Contribute to discussions about engineering best practices and architecture within the relevant area of expertise.
  • Build and maintain processes and tools that support productivity and code quality.
  • Own features end to end, from concept to production, and help shape what and how the team builds.
