About The Position

Via is hiring a Senior Software Engineer on the Remix engineering team to build software cities use to design and improve public transportation systems, with a focus on access, equity, and long-term sustainability. The role owns features end to end, from concept through production, and contributes to decisions about what to build and how to build it. The work includes optimization, geospatial computation, machine learning, and AI, using technologies such as Python, Ruby, TypeScript, and React. The engineer will improve planning and scheduling products so transit planners can explore concepts, make data-informed decisions, and deliver better service. They will build, scale, and improve optimization and backend systems, ensuring they perform quickly and reliably in production. The role collaborates with designers, data scientists, algorithm researchers, product managers, in-house transit planners and schedulers, and customers. It also contributes to engineering practices, architecture, processes, and tools that support productivity and code quality.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Experience building and scaling a computationally hard system in production, such as optimization, routing, search, simulation, or geospatial processing.
  • Effective use of AI tools in day-to-day engineering work.
  • A user-centered approach, including willingness to talk to customers and address core customer needs.
  • Collaborative, humble, empathetic, and feedback-driven approach.
  • Passion for companies with strong values and missions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with operations research, mathematical optimization, or applied machine learning.
  • Experience with geospatial data, mapping technologies, or data visualization.
