Engineering Manager, Federal & Regulated Infrastructure

Snorkel AI•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Snorkel AI is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the team that adapts its Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) platform for government and regulated enterprise customers. The team will make the services behind DaaS operate securely in high-assurance, regulated infrastructure while avoiding a separate product fork and preserving the capabilities used to generate data, evaluations, and benchmarks. This is a zero-to-one role. The manager will deeply understand regulated-customer technical requirements, lead architecture changes with the team and platform organization, and move and deploy services into regulated environments end to end. The team builds the infrastructure and deployment foundation rather than data itself, partnering closely with Applied AI, which works directly with customers to develop data and evaluations and deliver them in those environments. The manager makes autonomous technical, execution, and people decisions and contributes hands-on technical judgment alongside the technical leadership team. The role is offered in New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, or remotely within the United States. The posted compensation range is $215,000–$315,000, with employee stock options also included. Another salary-range statement in the posting lists $210,000–$315,000 USD. Actual compensation depends on skills, qualifications, experience, and geographic location.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of software engineering experience with strong hands-on technical depth.
  • At least 2 years of experience in an engineering management role leading a team of engineers.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience deploying into government or other regulated cloud environments with isolated, air-gapped, or otherwise restricted networks.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating scaled production systems in the cloud, including infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and containerized services.
  • Ability to engage deeply in architecture and design reviews and propose meaningful technical changes.
  • Experience with security-sensitive or regulated-environment compliance, such as FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, CMMC, SOC 2, HIPAA, or similar.
  • Experience hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers.
  • Clear communication with engineers, security and compliance partners, customers, and executives.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers through rapid growth.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team through a zero-to-one build by defining regulated-customer technical requirements, making necessary architecture changes, and deploying and operating services in regulated environments end to end.
  • Partner with the platform team to determine where to adapt for regulated infrastructure and where to remain consistent with the commercial platform.
  • Build repeatable environment provisioning using infrastructure as code and CI/CD to promote releases from commercial environments into regulated ones, incorporating security scanning and change control.
  • Work with Security, Compliance, Product, and Applied AI to translate FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, CMMC, and customer-specific requirements into engineering work, with documented and audit-ready design decisions.
  • Own operational outcomes in regulated environments, including continuous monitoring, vulnerability management, incident response, and the related evidence trail.
  • Address gaps between commercial and regulated infrastructure and design alternatives where services or capabilities differ.
  • Drive hiring and build a strong engineering team as the organization scales.
  • Coach and develop engineers and tech leads to become owners who consider problems beyond their individual projects.
  • Set priorities, plans, and delivery commitments, and rebalance them as company needs change.
  • Establish engineering standards for design reviews, testing, observability, and root cause analysis.

Benefits

  • Employee stock options.
  • Opportunities to shape priorities and initiatives, influence strategic decisions, and impact company success.
  • Support for career growth, technical development, leadership opportunities, and learning across functions.
